Earth First!
Founded by Dave Foreman in 1980 - left the WILDERNESS SOCIETY because it was too
wimpy and ineffectual
Members took part in dramatic civil disobedience campaigns.
When these failed, they moved on to acts of sabotage - that they called “Eco-tage”
Goal: Stop commercialization in biologically sensitive lands –with particular focus on old-growth forests
Earth First!
Tactics: 1) Raise awareness of the Destruction of the Forest 2) Increase the cost for companies engaged in environmentally destructive practices 3) Shame mainstream environmentalists into taking stronger stands by harshly criticizing them and exposing their compromising positions
Basis of their Ethics: Self Defense: Since “Earth Defense is Self Defense”
“Earth Defense is Self Defense”
Road block on
access road to a
development
Chained together blocking entrance to a Fracking Business
Blocking a Logging Road
Tree Sitting
Chained herself to the bottom of a tractor trailer
Earth First! Turns to Violence
Dave Foreman on Violence
“Any creature, no matter how seemingly meek, will fight back when threatened . . . Eastern [religious] ideas of stepping out of the violent cycle are presumptuous and anthropocentric (by setting human beings apart from the semi-violent natural world) . . . I am entirely pragmatic about violence/nonviolence. We should use whichever we feel comfortable with and whichever is most appropriate to a particular situation . . . There are many paths one can take to defend our Earth Mother. Including that of the warrior”
“Unfortunately, I am still an animal . . . I cannot turn the other cheek”
Tactics:
Pouring sand in the crank cases of earth movers and bulldozers.
Rounded up and freed cattle to protest damage to sensitive government land
Cut down billboards along the San Diego County coastline
Disabled the vehicles--- and tried to make citizen arrests of off-road enthusiasts who they say were driving illegally
Stalk hunters looking for bighorn sheep in the Mojave Desert, sounding air horns to scare animals
Drive Spikes into Old Growth Trees which they break the chainsaws of forest company workers
Pull up Survey Stakes places by surveyors around proposal building sites in sensitive areas
“No Compromise in Defense
of Mother Earth”
Eco-Defense
Earth First! Splintered over how violent to be
Tension in the group 1- Over how “religious/spiritual” they should be and 2- Over peaceful Civil Disobedience or Violent Confrontationalism
The Earth Liberation Front (ELF)
ELF was established in the United Kingdom in 1990 and in the US in 1992
Took direct action in resistance to roadbuilding projects in forests , many of which enjoyed significant public support.
Started out more nonviolent civil disobedience but many members felt that more aggressive tactics than nonviolent civil disobedience were necessary.
Members refer to themselves as “elves”
Earth Liberation Front
Each cell of the ELF operates autonomously and separately from the others.
ELF cells anonymously send communiques to the above-ground Press Office, which publicizes and explains the underground actions.
General ELF Guidelines:
Any direct action taken to halt ecological destruction whilst keeping to the following guidelines could, if claimed as such, be considered an ELF action.
To inflict maximum economic damage on those profiting from the destruction and exploitation of the natural environment.
To reveal and educate the public about the atrocities committed against the earth and all species that populate it.
To take all necessary precautions against harming any animal - human and nonhuman.
Earth Liberation Front
Tactics:
Burning down housing developments in former wilderness
Destroying the buildings of Timber companies
Destroying SUVs and entire franchises
Destroying Ski Resorts under construction
Caused several 100 million dollars worth of damage in
the US since 1992
FBI Labeled the ELF its number one domestic terrorism group.
