In all cultures, there is a type of people that judge others by the way they look, how they dress, and even the color of their skin. This kind of people can be found everywhere in our world. In the story “The Big Black Good Man”, this aspect can be seen through the encounter of the characters Olaf and Jim. Throughout the story, strong language is used when Olaf is thinking about Jim; he describes and discriminates against him just because of his appearance and skin color. Racism has always been a problem facing our societies, and it especially affects those with colored skin. The way Olaf thinks about Jim at the beginning of the story does not change at the end because of multiple reasons, the most important of which is when Jim put his hands around Olaf’s neck; Olaf thinks that he is going to kill him, and that is a product of his misjudgment of the big black man. This mirrors a stereotypical behavior that we see today with the discrimination against people of color.
