race reflection
DUE DATE: Monday, Dec 9th 2019
Objective:
The aim of this assignment is for you to engage in an in-depth manner the texts and subjects that we have encountered during the course of this semester. Please refer to texts (which includes articles, books & videos) that were presented during the semester in order to thoroughly address and answer the following questions:
Write a 5-6 page paper answering each of the following:
1. What is your major and or course of study? (Accounting)
2. After taking this course, how would you define the terms race and racism?
3. How are issues of race and racism either addressed or not addressed within your field of study? Have you ever had to think about race in your major course classes? What do you find to be interesting or thought- provoking as it pertains to racism and the career you will be pursuing in the future?
· For number three, you are expected to use terminology, concepts, and examples from the texts in this course to explain the answers you provide. For example, “As a Physical Magic major, we do not often discuss race in our courses, yet instances of what Tim Wise describes as color-blind racism unfortunately occur often in our department between faculty and students.”
4. What is one thing you would have liked to learn about and/or discuss more in this class as it relates to Race & Racism? Why?
5. What are three readings (attached) that resonated with you most this semester? Why? (You can use thoughts that you posted on discussion boards as well within answering this question)
· For number five, you are expected to mention the authors, the titles of their texts, plus explicitly state and explain what ideas/concepts from their article/book it was that resonated with you.
6. How have your ideas and thoughts about racism changed due to being a student in this course? Please state clearly your previous ideas about racism, followed by your ideas on racism now. Do you have any family members or friends who would benefit from being exposed the information you have learned in this course? If so, in what ways, if any, do you plan on sharing what you’ve learned in this course with the broader community beyond your classmates?
7. Using the Blockson Collection Stereotypical Images online database- how has the portrayal of African Americans in US media changed or stay the same? Select one piece (pieces/artifacts may be posters, books, pictures, sculptures, sheet music, newspaper articles, etc.) The collection content is about Blackface and minstrel shows in the United States during the 19th century and early 20th century (pre-1940). You are then to include a picture / snapshot of the image within your Word Document (this pictures must be taken from their online database ). Make a direct comparison between the artifact you select and the difference or similarity with current media.
Access collection here: https://digital.library.temple.edu/digital/custom/stereotypical-images
The piece must be associated with Blackface performance and/or the production of minstrel shows or commercial products or music. Images that are generic and do not specifically fit that criteria are not acceptable.
8. After taking this class, how would you define the United States of America? Explain how this class experience has, or has not, changed your understanding of the United States and whether it is a place that is equally inclusive of ALL Americans.
REMEMBER: This is to be completed as an essay. Bullet point submissions are not acceptable and will be marked 0. This must take the form of an essay. Your responses must be concise, but indicative of reflection and thoughtfulness.
