Problem analysis
A discussion with Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo), class-based learning support and teachers indicated that Evan appeared to become aggressive and noisy in situations where he was required to give written answers or complete a complex tasks independently. There was no particular trigger but a pattern which suggested the aggressive and difficult behavior followed work related-problems. This would begin by him throwing down his pen and sighing. Difficult behavior also increased when he was offered help.
Problem solving
The hypothesis was that Evan was experiencing difficulty with aspects of school which involved planning, organizing and sequencing or completing tasks at speed. This was raising anxiety and causing behavior issues to emerge. His fear of failure and concern about feeling foolish was exacerbated when offered help which was making the situation worse for him.
