Respond to the following prompt in the manner outlined in the "Essay Response Rubric." Attach your 500 word response as a DOC file. In the first part of this two-part question, discuss the changing social role of music during the Civil Rights Movement. Did popular music further, hinder, or merely reflect the cause of the African-American population in the United States? How did this role develop over the course of the 60s? Use specific examples of artists, songs, and social movements. Second, describe the ways in which the music changed over the course of the decade and the movement. How did the musical content shift and in what ways did different artists, styles, and songs reflect similar shifts in the social role of the music? Include relevant information regarding the industry pressures on musicians and record labels and, as always, specific examples.
