Questions for Remarque, All Quiet on the Western Front
The paper should be 5-pages, double-spaced, 12-point font in New Times Roman, 1" margins,
have a clear thesis and structure of organization. Include a title but no title-page or bibliography.
Citations can be in-text (in parenthesis at the end of the sentence) and you need to indicate the
page number when providing a direct quotation. You can submit rough drafts for me to examine
before the due date but no rewrites after the final submission.

1. Explain and analyze the epigraph.
2. The First World War is often understood as a rupture with the previous norms of society
and civilization. What do we learn about war from the novel? How is war portrayed?
Why does such a representation challenge traditional narratives of how war was
understood?
3. How has the war changed those who fought in it? Examine the characters’ interactions
with the non-war world and account for the differences.
