2. Discuss how the writing interview (pages 166-168) could be a useful tool for refining your writing instruction and/or strategies you use with individual struggling writers.

Assignment # 3: Interview of a public school teacher or administrator with previous teaching experience (20% of final grade)

 

Students are expected to interview a teacher (preschool through 12th grade) or administrator in a building that serves preschool through 12th grade. The school must be a public school. *No identifying information about the teacher, school, or students worked with may be disclosed.  Additionally, no identifying information should be recorded on paper or presented to this class.

 

Students are expected to hand in:

1: A full transcription

2: Brief summary

3: Interviewer/Student reflection of the interview in conjunction with thoughts from the course content (2-3 pages minimum)

 

The interview should include the following questions.  Additional questions are encouraged though should remain relevant and professional.

-What is your current role?

-Age group served?

-What are the past roles you have had in the field of education?

-Have you ever taught students with disabilities?  Can you describe this experience? Setting? Pros and cons?

-Without disclosing any identifying information, what kind of disabilities did the students have?

-What techniques, accommodations, modifications, and/or approached were used to integrate the students with disabilities into the class?

-What are some of your favorite/ most useful strategies used to integrate students with disabilities into the classroom?

-What was most difficult for the students with disabilities?

            (How did they do academically? Socially? Adaptively?)

-What was most difficult for you as a teacher?

-What was the experience of the other children in the class?

-How do you feel about the process of integrating students with disabilities into classrooms?

-What do you think others feel about this process? (the students with disabilities, teachers, parents, administration, students, etc.)

-What suggestions do you have to make the process of integrating students with disabilities better?

· Discuss the characteristics of students who have severe disabilities.  How might understanding the characteristics and/or causes of a student’s disability help a teacher integrate them into the classroom?   What are some of the models used for teaching these students and integrating them into the class? Please include other considerations such as the environment and use of technology. Be sure to discuss the benefits and limitations to the approaches mentioned.
