QUESTIONS

Respond in full thoughtful sentences and paragraphs to the following questions:

1. Russell argues that a key distinction needs to be made “between identities that are based on what can be broadly described as ideological or value-laden commitments, and those that do not carry any such baggage” (Russell, 2). In your own words, explain why Russell finds this distinction (between ideological and nonideological commitments) so important for questions of religious tolerance.

2. Toward the end of the article, Russell points out one problem with his own position. He acknowledges that even when criticism is “properly” based in ideological objections it “can still lack proper moderation and civility in its manner of expression” (Russell, 7). I tend to find Russell’s arguments quite compelling. Regardless, however, of whether you agree or disagree with Russell’s overall arguments, what other problem(s) might someone point out about his position?

NOTE : Responses are to be crafted into a single essay.
