Brand Name vs. Generic Term If you are interested in searching on a brand name product, such as iPod, note that

you will get different results depending on whether you enter the brand name (“iPod”) or the generic term (“portable media player”). At the USPTO site, the generic term is more likely to result in the patent for the original iPod since the

brand name may not have been known at the time the patent was filed.
