Research and Evidence Based Practice-2

This paper is to be typed, double spaced, using APA format. It should be written as a narrative summary of the article (no headings to be used), 3-5 pages excluding title and reference page. This assignment is the quantitative study that you used for your evidence based poster project.

The following should be addressed in your critique of the study.

Purpose/Research Problem-(5pts)

Describe and explain the purpose (may be stated as objective or aim) of the study and how it is relevant to nursing practice or nursing education.

Research Design-(5pts)

State the design used for the study. Did the study identify the use of a conceptual or theoretical framework? If so, explain and define the framework as described in the study and why the authors used this framework to guide the study.

If no framework used, just state this.

Literature Review-(10pts)

Summarize findings from the literature review that support the need for the current study.

Research Question (5pts)

Was there a stated research question or hypothesis? If so, describe how it reflects the purpose of the study. If written as a hypothesis, were the variables defined and how so?

Study Sample-(10pts)

Discuss how the subjects were chosen (randomly, conveniently, etc.) and explain. If inclusion and exclusion criteria were shared, explain this as well. What was the final sample size?

Did the study have IRB approval? (Remember this may not be stated as IRB, could say ethics committee, etc., this approval no matter how the entity is named is looking at the ethics of the study). If not, did the authors speak to informed consent and/or how data and subjects were protected?

Data Collection-(20pts)

Describe and summarize the following: 1) how was data collected (method, timeframe), 2) what kinds of tools or instruments were used to collect data? 3) describe how we know if the tools/instruments are reliable/valid (think statistics), 4) explain how the tools/instruments were scored (what does the score mean?). If an intervention was done in the study, describe and explain.

NOTE: the likert scale is not an instrument, it is a method of how an instrument is scored, like a survey.

Data Analysis-(5pts)

What statistical methods were used to analyze data (descriptive, inferential). What program was used (ie: SPSS (version…).

Study Results-(15pts)

Discuss the findings and significance from the analysis. Include important statistical information as needed (including demographics of the sample). Were the results supported in the literature, discussed by the authors? If a framework was used explain how the results tied back to the framework. Discuss limitations of the current study as shared by the authors. Can findings of this study be generalized to the target population?

Study Recommendations-(10pts)

Discuss recommendations for nursing practice and/or education. Also, discuss identified needs for future research. (Both of these come from the authors discussion in the study).

Proofread for grammar issues, to include overuse of (that, this, it, these) and personal pronouns (they, their, she, he, etc).

Proofread for spelling errors.

Do not overuse direct quotes. Remember, these should only be used for very important key points that cannot be paraphrased or summarized or they lose their meaning.
