This assignment is intended to:
· Provide hands-on practice with the qualitative methodology of coding
· Engage your critical thinking regarding analysis and evaluation
Here is the file (as a .xlsx and .pdf) with the qualitative interview responses in their unedited entirety:
Qualitative Interview Practice(1-63) (1).xlsx

Actions
You will be assigned a subset of the responses to code based on last name:
· A-I code the red responses
· J-R code the green responses
· S-Z code the blue responses
To successfully complete this assignment, you will:
1. Generate open codes for your responses (there should be a lot)
2. Generate axial codes based on the open codes (there will be less than a lot:)
3. Attach the file with your open and axial codes. The file might be excel, word process, or a picture of your hand-highlighted codes.
4. Write 2 brief paragraphs answering 1) what was challenging about qualitative coding; 2) when is the best time to use a qualitative method?
1. For each, your answer should include examples and references to course material

Open Codes
|
|
2.0 pts
Excellent
Student generated clear open codes that closely relate to the written text. Evidence that student understands the purpose of open codes and can apply the concept of open coding to real coding work.
|
1.0 pts
Needs Work
Student submitted a document with codes, but open codes are not clear. Or the labeled open codes are not closely tied to the written text or are too broad or interpretive. Evidence that student needs more review of the purpose of open coding.

Self-reflection
|
|
4.0 pts
Excellent
Student reflects on challenges in their experience with qualitative coding. The reflection clearly relates to the real coding the student did and references course material. Student also addresses the evaluation of qualitative methods, reporting when the methods are best suited. This evaluation is supported with course information.
|
3.0 pts
Acceptable
Student addresses both the reflection on challenges and evaluation of qualitative methods' best uses. The report relies on opinion and hypotheticals more than actual experience and course references.
