Hello Classmates,
Our module 8 resource reading explained the issue of inaccurate bid assumptions made by contractors, and their negative impacts. Contractors were often awarded a bid based on a mistake, or dishonest intentions. Inexperienced bidders often made undervalued labor cost assumptions and inaccurate quantity of materials required. Honest contractors often lost money, instead of profiting. Then, it was just a matter of time before the honest contractor eventually had no business (British architect, 1877).
I do believe procurement ethics have evolved slightly, over the last 130 years. In 1877, “a contractor who relies entirely upon making a living by doing good honest work, will starve in less than a year” (British architect, 1877). This was mainly because not many people were willing to pay what quality work cost. In our current society, people seem more aware of the reasons why quality work often costs more, thus are will to pay for it. There is also probably more people in today’s society that earn higher incomes, allowing them to have the option to buy the “best”. One does need to remain cautious though, and perform research on potential contractors since the saga of low bids/cheap/crappy/work is still a thing consumers are contending with.

Hi Class! Congratulations on making to the final week of this course!
After reviewing the module resources, I think an excellent example of how procurement ethics
has changed in the past 130 years would be how the mindset of businesses has changed. In the
past, when a business procured services, organizations had to send resources to contact
contractors for bids through the post office, telephone, or going to that place of business. When
bidding on a project, there were ways a contractor could cut corners so they could win a bid on a
contract. Since then, different acts have been enacted to protect these organizations. In the past20
years, the internet has made this process easier to accomplish these tasks. The power of the
internet and how everyone is connected make it easier for contractors, organizations, and people
to write reviews or make unethical public behavior. As a result, the power of the internet has
changed procurement in ethics because contractors are more cognizant and are forced to make
better ethical decisions when performing tasks on a project in fear of a profit loss. An example
would be how H&M clothing publishes just under 99% of their suppliers' information on their
website to ensure they are held accountable publicly and allows verification that suppliers are
following the company's standards. (Lavergne, 2017)
