The success or failure of any project in the organization depends on multiple factors, including types of the project, types of organization, and many other organizational internal and external factors. Depending upon the risk involved in the IT project, success and failure chances can vary. Risk calculation and risk management are the two key factors in IT project management. An organization should implement an incremental development methodology for IT project development (Vasileva). Especially when the project is from scratch and development requires a lot of employee involvement, the project’s cost is very high, and the development work has never implemented feasibility work in the past for it. In the above-described situation, it is beneficial to implement the incremental development model so that project tracking can be easy and the iteration result of each increment can be verified for the success or failure of the project. Even though after implementing best IT practices, sometimes IT projects fail due to the lack of stakeholder support, management interest, and sponsorship issues.

The international project institutes define policies, standards, and best practices for project team members and project management, which can help to achieve the organizational goals. This standard provides best practices for communication and coordination between different internal and external groups. An organization uses this standard as a tool to achieve business goals. Here are some of the critical factors of the project’s failure or success. It includes Project goals or project boundary, Organization management support and interest, project planning, client or customer involvement, types of work including technicality of the project, monitoring, and communication.

The project goal should be clear, and boundaries should be defined and captured in the proper requirement document. There are many IT tools available in the market; it can be very helpful to track the requirements at the project management level. For example, Team foundation server. Another important factor in a project’s failure or success is management support in terms of financial budget and timeline. Sometimes, depending upon the project's technical criticality and timeline, the project manager may require additional resources to complete the project on time (Marko, 2019).
