EDU 262: Public Relations Assignment

If you are not currently working at a child care center, pretend you are for an imaginary/future center. All questions must be addressed thoroughly and in complete sentences.

1. What does the term “Public Relations” mean?

2. How are people treated when people call your center? How are you assuring that the person answering the phone courteous, friendly, and helpful?

3. How does your voicemail system work? Do callers get led through a frustrating phone maze? How does the call get returned promptly?

4. How is the community notified of your center events that promote your center’s public relations? Are parents given enough notice so they may re-arrange their schedules to attend?

5. How well do teachers and administrators communicate with families/parents? What are the proofs that account for good/effective communication?

6. Create a list with the names and numbers of key media contacts in your community.

7. Do you have plans for Crisis Communication? If so, describe. What did you learn about crisis communication from the website reading?

8. Promoting Your Organization: Putting a positive face forward.

Take a cue from students: Is there an activity children enjoy particularly? What makes it so special? What about activities where children are particularly interested--is it because of a teacher's innovative approach? Look beyond school-related activities, too. A story about your employee who may be a star on the local events and voluntary work or a photo essay on a child who participates in a community event that benefits the school even though the activities aren't directly related to the classroom.
