Public Information Officer Plan You are the new officer assigned as the police department's Public information Officer (PIO). You work for a small to mid-sized metropolitan police agency. Until this point in time your agency has never had a large incident with public concern and outcry. Your agency was just involved in an officer involved shooting where the officer was completely justified in his actions however false information has surfaced that the suspect was unarmed. The incident occurred in a grocery store parking lot in the early morning hours with no witnesses present. Investigators have obtained a video of the incident from the grocery store and have provided that to you as the public information officer. The chief wants the video released in the next 24 hours for transparency and open communication with the community.

Write a 1,400- to 1,750-word paper that includes the following: • Describe the genre(s) of communication(s) you would use (paper format, social media, public announcement, press release, televised media conference, etc.) • How will you communicate to groups and teams within the organization? • How will you format your written communication report? • Is increased social media part of your written plan or message? (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) • How persuasive of a message should leadership draft? • How persuasive can leadership be with messaging and communication with stakeholders in a public notice? • What do you do with citizens who communicate an opposition regarding video releases? • What are the differing concerns of internal communication versus external communication on this issue? • How would you follow up on the notification (increments, quarterly, annual, etc.)
