Arizona women seeking to breastfeed their children in public won a key victory Wednesday when lawmakers voted
to recommend passage of a bill that would give them the right.
The Government Reform and Government Finance Accountability Committee voted unanimously in favor of House
Bill 2376, which mandates that Arizona's indecent-exposure statute does not apply to breastfeeding mothers.
Under current law, a woman who is breastfeeding her child in public could be criminally prosecuted if a bystander
is offended. If the bystander is a child, the woman could be charged with a felony.
Mothers who attended the hearing to give testimony were visibly delighted by the outcome.
"I know it's the first step in a long process," said Karen Bayless Feldman, a Phoenix resident. "But I'm glad it went
as well as it did today."
Amy Milliron began fighting for the legislation last year after a lifeguard at a Chandler pool asked her not to
breastfeed her 2-month-old son, Aiden, on the pool deck.
The Tempe resident said Arizona should join almost 40 other states in affirming women's right to breastfeed in
public.
"We need to be able to feed our children wherever we are," she said.
Sponsored by Reps. Jonathan Paton and Timothy Bee, the bill would also downgrade other instances of indecent
exposure from a Class 6 felony to a Class 1 misdemeanor.
