Week 7

PUB-7019 v1: Public Policy Administration (5264028831)

Assessing the Value of Social Programs

Redistributive policies support millions of Americans every day. Different social programs

provide meaningful support to individuals and families across the United States. Millions

of Americans rely on social programs for survival, whether it is paying for prescription

drugs, hospital visits, or suitable housing.

Social programs and social policies by design are established to effectively manage

expectation by helping to alleviate certain strain on the economy and within local

communities. While social programs use up a large portion of the federal budget, some of

these programs are quite effective and bring added value to millions of lives across the

United States. As part of the policy process, public policy administrators are routinely

monitoring for areas within particular policies that need improvement.

Assessing the value of social programs can be a difficult task because gathering feedback

from beneficiaries does not always go according to plan when the policies work well.

When the policies are not working as well as intended, then the public will inform the

agencies in charge of administering those policies. Policy researchers sometimes conduct

surveys to gather feedback on different policies, but those efforts do not always yield a

lot of participants. However, some members of the public will respond to these

questionnaires and do provide some feedback to help policymakers determine which

policies require attention. Sometimes, the best way to determine if the policies are

working is to judge the amount of negative feedback received or the lack of negative

feedback received to gauge whether or not the public likes certain policies.
