Week 6

PUB-7019 v1: Public Policy Administration (5264028831)

Assessing the Benefits and Challenges with Government Subsidies and Incentives

The great recession of 2007-2009 has left lasting strains on the U.S. economy, different

industries, businesses, and families across the United States. During the recovery period,

the U.S. government through the Obama Administration provided certain bailouts to

various industries like the banking and automobile industries. Many policies were drafted

and implemented to slow down the economic damages, while also trying to find ways to

restart the economy.

The financial bailout of the different industries during the great recession added a vast

amount of money to the U.S. debt. The gamble paid off as the U.S. economy started to

bounce back, the unemployment rate dropped, employment increased, and consumers

regained their confidence in spending.

Many opposing political leaders criticized the bailout of the different industries, citing the

impact to the national debt as not being worth the risks. Many in the media carried

ongoing coverage to shed light on the recession and recovery efforts. The media, in this

case, played a crucial role in how information was released to the public and helped to

narrate and analyze different policies being implemented.

Media personnel and other policy experts were analyzing different policies on television,

radio, and in print and online newspapers on a daily basis to help the public understand

what each policy meant. Naturally, there were some political influences, but that is to be

expected with policy development and implementation. Politics play a role in policy

development, implementation, and evaluation because different political views often clash

over what policies are instituted.
