In-Text Citations

 An in-text citation is a shortened notation that is inserted right into the text of a paper and indicates to readers that the information you just used was borrowed from someone else. It is shortened because a full entry with all of the information needed to look up a source would interfere with reading your paper. In most cases, an in-text citation is simply the author’s last name and date of publication or a page number (Last Name, Year, p. #). However, as you will learn shortly, in-text citation format varies depending on the style guide you use, and for some style guides, in-text citations vary between paraphrases and quotations, as well as what information is available to you on the original document that you are using.

■ Also you can use signal phrasing or incorporating the author’s last name into the paraphrase, summary, or quotation lead.

■ ** How does an in-text citation help the reader? **
