Psychological Effects Children of Incarcerated Parents

Denise L Caldwell

Title

Children of incarcerated parents are impacted by various stages of the incarceration. This

would include the arrest, court appearances, sentencing, visitation and release. Through this

process the child is likely to experience a variety of emotions which could be both positive and

negative. Children that lived with an incarcerated parent may be at a higher risk for developing

mental health issues, substance use and behavioral issues than those of a parent who has never

been incarcerated (SOURCE). Incarceration of a parent changes the life course the normalcy and the Comment by [email protected]: This sentence needs to be restated. It is unclear.

foundation of development has been interrupted. When a parent is removed from the home a

child may experience a feeling of loss, hopelessness, depression and feelings of abandonment

and shame. These behaviors are oftentimes visible in their behavior at school and at home. “In

particular, children with an incarcerated parent were more than three times more likely to

have behavioral problems or depression than similar children without an imprisoned parent,

and at least twice as likely to suffer from learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, and anxiety”

A child that lives in a single parent home and does not have a relationship with the

incarcerated parent may respond differently and may continue normal development. A child that

longs for a relationship with the parent may experience feelings similar to a child who lived with

an incarcerated parent. Children that suffer from post-traumatic stress experience aan increased

sense of loss when a mother is incarcerated (SOURCE). Generally the mother is the caretaker and some may

dispute her ability to be a good mother and provider if she is incarcerated. Everyday parents are

incarcerated and families are divided which poses a greater risk on society. Programs have been

developed to assist children that have a parent who is incarcerated. Comment by [email protected]: In your paper you will want to highlight some of those programs.
