PSYC-203 Library Research Assignment (40 pts)
This LIBRARY assignment provides an opportunity for students to research a topic of interest within specific areas of Abnormal Psychology. The students will not only gain insight and information regarding the chosen topic, but an understanding of the process of research and its methodology.
The steps for completing LIBRARY assignment
1. Choose an article after we have had our Library Orientation.
2. Make sure that the article is considered a PRIMARY SOURCE. This would be found in an academic journal ONLY . The author(s) must be the researcher(s) reporting on a specific study and its results. A Primary Source would include the following: a review of the literature, a description of methodology including the sample selection process, a description of the statistical analysis, and a discussion on the results. Use the following criteria when choosing your Primary Research Article:
· Your Primary source article must include the entire study, it cannot be an Abstract only.
· You should not be using any article that has Review in the title.
· Your Primary source article cannot be older than 6 years.
· Your Primary source article cannot be shorter than 4 pages.
· Your Primary source article cannot be any student paper written for a Doctoral dissertation or Master’s degree.
3. After copying the reference information (see example) in APA format, summarize IN YOUR OWN WORDS the content of the article in 3-4 paragraphs. The summary should include a synopsis of the study’s intent (rationale) and hypothesis, the research methodology, including information about the sample and assessments, ending with the conclusions of the researcher(s). This summary should not include personal opinions. Your summary should be in exactly the same format as shown in the example on the next 2 pages. Your summary should be double-spaced , 250-350 words, and you must include the word count!
4. This assignment must be uploaded to Canvas. Your Reference page must have an active link to your article. Your link must work and go directly to the Journal article itself, not just to the library database page . Double check it before handing in. If I cannot open your article you will lose points on the assignment.
FYI: This will also be the format/template for the Primary and Secondary sources for your Disorders in the Media Paper!!!

This study examined how media consumption was related to body image and awareness and internalization of thinness norms. The study included 62 men and 119 women (17 to 30 years of age) attending University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand.
Participants were randomly assigned to individual experimental cubicles containing a computer where questionnaires were administered. To assess how well subjects knew about the cultural pressure to be thin, researchers used The Sociocultural Attitude towards Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ), a 14-item questionnaire. The Figure Rating Scale (FRS) was administered to measure subject’s body perception. To measure how much participants compared themselves to others, the researchers used the 11-item Iowa-Netherlands Social Comparison Orientation measure (INCON). Finally, The Media Time Use measure assessed how many hours of media (watching TV and Music videos, reading magazines, etc) each participant was exposed to each week and then each participant listed how much impact each show, video and magazine had on body image.
Though men and women reported equivalent awareness of norms, women internalized those thinness norms more than men. Body perception analysis showed that thought there were no significant differences in men’s figure selections, women felt that their bodies were larger than they were in actuality. Media consumption pattern results for the three types of media showed no significant difference in consumption by men and women. The number of hours women spent watching music videos, however, was observed to the most consistent predictor of both their awareness and internalization of thinness norms. This study suggests that exposure to dominant body ideals leads to awareness and internalization of apparent norms, especially for women, and those who recognize the norms are attracted to the media representations that confirm them.
