Course Project: Lifespan Development Project Deliverable #2: The Person and the Theory

Assignment Overview

This week, you will look for a news story on an individual and describe the lifespan developmental stage/age the individual is experiencing. Thinking like a developmentalist, you will apply concepts from the book and describe what may have contributed to this person's situation.

This assignment is intended to explore various theories and influences regarding human development. You will use research skills and communicate and support your ideas using clear and logical writing.

Assignment Details:

Perform the following tasks:

· Complete the reading assignment and the interactive lesson before attempting this assignment.

· Select a recent news article about a life event of an individual. It can be health related, accident related, educational, or even achievement-oriented. It will be one "slice in the lifespan of that person." For example, you might select a story of someone who has achieved a major goal in life after experiencing a debilitating accident. An example would be Nick Vujicic. Or, you could choose the story of an individual who may be suspected of a developmental disorder, and who is involved in tragedy such as James Holmes. You are encouraged to Google these individuals and read about their stories for ideas for your own selection. Write an essay (approximately 150-175 words) in the space provided in the Assignment Worksheet section on page three addressing the following questions:

1. What is happening to this individual? Give a brief summary.

2. What stage of lifespan developmental stage/age is this person experiencing (i.e. Infant, child, adolescent, or adult and the chronological age)?

3. How might have the "twig" (person) been bent? Select at least three major developmentalist assumptions such as nature/nurture, behaviorism, genetic code, sociocultural, or any other developmental concepts from your textbook and discuss how these developmental concepts may have contributed to this person's situation before, during and after the life event featured in the news article.

Assignment Worksheet:

James Holmes

James is a convicted muderder in America who is responsible for the 2013 Aurora shooting. He had no records of criminal background before the shooting took place. He was arrested a few days after the shooting and was immediatlt jailed withot bail consideration. While in jail, James attempted suicide several times which made him get hospitalized. He was later sentenced to twelve consecutive life sentences.

Stage of lifespan development

James is experiencing early adulthood lifespan development of his life. He was born in 1987 which means he is at his early 30s. People who are in their 20s and 30s are referred to be experiencing earlt adulthood in the lifespan development stages.

James started having mental health issues at middle school and his lawyer confirmed that james attempted suicide at the age of 11 years. He has grown with suicidal thoughts and also the desire to kill people. One of the reasons his first relationsgip ended is because of his desire to kill people. This can be explained by the concept of nature vs nurture. Nurture is the impact of the environment. James’ strange behavior began in childhood when he started seeing nail ghost on the walls of his bedroom at night and they would fight each other using firearms. He grew up with the desire to use firearms and kill people. Stability vs change is another developmental concept that can be applied in this context. Stability is whereby a behavior is learned during infancy and is endures throughout the lifespan. The personality traits of jemaes changed when he was a child and has carried along until adulthood.

In conclusion, in lifespan development, a lot of learning takes place during childhood and the traits that are learned in childhood are in most cases endured throughout lifetime. Someone can experience something in childhood and then face the consequences later in life.
