PSY-150: Quantitative Assessment

Spring 2020

purpose

The Quantitative Literacy assignment is NOT directly tied to a specific chapter in your textbook.

Students must complete the assignment as part of the assessment process at FTCC (PSY-150 was selected for quantitative literacy, other courses are assessing different outcomes).

The assignment counts the same as any other written assignment/DB.

The Assignment

Students will be given real data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

The data is presented as 1) a table; and 2) a chart

Students are asked to answer 5 questions using the data provided

Mean

Mean: the sum of all the values, divided by the number of values (average)

Ex.: 4, 2, 1, 3, 5

Find the sum: 4+2+1+3+5= 15

Divide by the number of values: 15/5= 3

The mean is 3

median

Median: the middle number in a list of numbers ordered lowest to highest

Ex.: 4, 2, 1, 3, 5

Order from lowest to highest: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Find the middle number: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

The median is 3

If there is not one middle number, add the two middle numbers together and divide by 2

Ex. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

3+4 = 7 ÷ 2 = 3.5

range

Range: the difference between the lowest value and the highest value

Ex.: 4, 2, 1, 3, 5

The lowest number is 1

The highest number is 5

5-1 = 4

The range is 4

Analyzing data

Take your time when analyzing data sets

Carefully read column and row headings

The ability to make assumptions and provide realistic explanations based on the numbers is important
