Individualism versus Collectivism.
“…the degree to which cultures will encourage, on the one hand, the tendency for people to look after themselves and their immediate family only, or, on the other hand, for people to belong to ingroups that are supposed to look after its members in exchange for loyalty.” (Matsumoto & Juang, p 22)
Concept was developed by Geert Hofstede in relation to work values and nationality.

Scoring the “I am…” statements
Open the “I am…” activity sheet you saved after Tutorial 1
Individually categorize your statements as:
Id (Idiocentric)
Gr (Group) or
Allo (Allocentric)
In pairs discuss how you categorised your statements
Discuss any that you found difficult to categorize
Scoring the “I am…” statements
Idiocentric (Id)- statements about personal qualities, attitudes, beliefs, behaviours, states and traits that DO NOT relate to other people.
e.g. I am honest, I am tall, I am tired
Group (Gr)- statements about group membership, demographic characterisitics and groups with which people share a common fate.
e.g. I am Italian, I am a mother, I am a nurse
Allocentric (Allo)-statements about interdependence, friendship, responsiveness to others, sensitivity to how others perceive you.
e.g. I am kind to others, I am easily embarrassed, I am happiest with my family

6. The statements are worth different amounts;
Statement 1 is worth 7
Statement 2 is worth 6
Statement 3 is worth 5
Statement 4 is worth 4
Statement 5 is worth 3
Statement 6 is worth 2
Statement 7 is worth 1
7. Assign each category the appropriate score
e.g. if statement 1 is Id, add 7 to the Id score
if statement 2 is Gr, add 6 to the Gr score and so on
