=====================2/3====================== VALIDITY IN QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH DESIGNS 2 Validity in Quantitative Research Designs A study is validated when chances of making flaws or mistakes are minimized so that the desired or expected results are not compromised in the long run (Bowman et al, 2005).[4] [7] The most critical part of a study is to ensure that the method of carrying out the research is right in all aspects. This ensures that the results give the exact statistics which would have been achieved even if another method of study was used (Polit & Beck, 2017). I reviewed an article titled: Effectiveness of an aspiration risk-reduction protocol.[0] [1] [4] [5] ... The method involved two-group quasi- experimental design for comparing outcomes of a usual care group (December 2002-September 2004) with another group of an Aspiration Risk-Reduction Protocol group (ARRP) of January 2007-April 2008 (Metheny, Davis-Jackson & Stewart, 2010).[0] [1] [2] [3] ... The number of participants in the usual care group was 329, against 145 participants from the ARRP group.[3] [0] [1] [2] ... The ARRP group set up had three components: 30 degree head-to-bed elevation, insertion of feeding tubes into distal small bowel, and use of an algorithmic approach for high gastric residual volumes (Metheny, Davis-Jackson & Stewart, 2010).[3] [0] [1] [2] ... Looking at the two experiments, I notice that they had different conditions in their set up. This could not give comparable results if the experiments were measuring the same outcomes. Additionally, the number of participants differed, and this could

bring in biasness. The ARRP experiment’s additional components meant that the experiment could not be compared with the usual care group experiment. This raises critical questions on the validity of comparison if the study was intended to fro comparable observation. One could also question the timings of the experiment which were different. For proper comparison, I suggest the studies to include control experiments so that further observations would also be made on the controls.
