Paper #1 Assignment Sheet
Primary Source Essay
200 Points Possible 20% of the Final Grade
A primary resource is one that is original or from the source. Some examples of primary sources include letters, speeches, photographs, contemporary accounts of an event (by a witness), manuscripts, interviews, and other original documents, artifacts, or media. A secondary resource is designed to interpret a primary source; it is at least one step removed from the primary source. Secondary sources offer analysis and contextual evidence of primary sources.
Things to Consider: Do not choose a topic with a direct personal connection. This will help you to demonstrate your ability to objectively interact with and analyze source material. However, I do highly recommend that you choose a topic that is relevant to your future profession and/or major. This class is designed to give you the tools to work within your field and this will be that first step into the academic research writing that you will complete over your tenure at.
Examples could include a Pharmacy major looking into addiction; Pre-med and PT looking into sports injuries or car accidents; or a History major exploring the trauma narratives of slavery or Holocaust survivors.
This assignment consists of two parts, which are described in detail below:
1) Critically reading/watching and analyzing the primary and secondary sources, focusing on our course theme of trauma.
2) Writing a 7 pages essay that compares the primary and secondary sources in terms of your chosen trauma. How do the primary and secondary sources discuss this trauma? Do they say similar things or do they differ? How so?
Reminders: Your essay must be thesis-driven. Craft a thesis that presents an argument about trauma – one that you can defend using the secondary sources. Some directions you might take (pick one):
a) Although secondary sources about ________ say X, the primary sources show Y; however, they both show Z.
b) Historically, while ______ was treated as A and B, the secondary sources show that now it is treated as C and D.
c) Both the primary and secondary sources show that A, B, and C are prominent characteristics of _______.
d) Secondary sources talking about ______ identify the main needs or support as X, however, the testimony of survivors identify that the needs are Y, leading us to believe ________.

Final Thoughts:
Your primary source paper must be at least 1850 words (7 pages long- this means 5 complete pages) and typed using correct MLA format for the heading and Works Cited page. You must have at least two direct quotes and two paraphrases from the sources, cited correctly in the updated MLA format. The goal is to interact with primary source material as much as possible to explore and understand its impact upon the way we understand the world, in this case trauma. A strong final paper will demonstrate argumentation supported in source material and analysis of all texts used.
