Based on the PowerPoint lectures, and the assigned readings, answer the discussion question below. Be sure to use a citation style when you cite from the readings. Any standard citation style is appropriate, but I would suggest using a parenthetical citation and then short bibliography if you use outside sources (beyond the assigned textbooks - you do not need to use outside sources). If you use the textbooks, you can simply put for example "(Heywood, p. 9)" as a citation.

Discussion Question/Issue: After reviewing the readings, the PowerPoint lectures, and watching the short TEDEd video in the German Fascism lecture, what conditions are necessary for a political system based on democratic principles to become a totalitarian system? What are some of the values (principles) of democracy that could be abused in order to create a totalitarian state? Is it possible for the democratic system in the U.S. to become a totalitarian state? Why or why not?
