Short Assignment

"The Onion" - presenting fiction and fact through satire

As a class we will review articles from "The Onion" related to politics. Your task will be to write a 1-page "Onion"/satirical piece about a political fact/fiction of your choice.

Remember as always, the focus is on examining a source's reliability and validity. "The Onion" is satirical, but sometimes people believe their articles are factual (see the two links below). The assignment is designed for you to consider how and why people perceive information to be factual. You may work by yourself or in a group. If you work in a group, the group will receive a group grade.

As you complete the assignment, consider the tools that make evidence valid (a "true" fact, “there is some truth there”) and reliable (source is to be trusted). What convinces you of an argument’s validity? How do you determine if information is fact or opinion?

1. As you review the onion articles, list the methods by which the article

a. "hooks" the reader

b. provides "evidence" to convince the reader

2. Pick a topic to write about (as a group)

3. Select a theme to your article (what is its intent, what are you trying to convince the audience to believe is true)

4. Determine "facts" to validity the theme

5. Draft a 1-page article (approximately 250-300 words)

The assignment is due at the end of class on Friday, February 15th, and is worth up to 25 points.
