REMINDERS FOR PERSUASIVE SPEECH: Use this set of reminders as a check list

during speech preparation and rehearsal.

OUTLINE REMINDERS:

____ 1. Remember to use the Functional Outline (on the back side of the Persuasive Speech

assignment page #1) to write your speech.

____ 2. Remember to use refutation of "things as they are now" in each section of your speech

body (remember you are proposing a change In the status quo="things as they are now").

____ 3. Remember to put a claim at the beginning of each section of the speech body

(need/problem, satisfaction/solution, and visualization/benefits). Remember that your solution should

propose a need for change (NOT that we continue do something that we do NOW).

____ 4. Remember to convert your questionnaire data to percentages. In order to receive

credit for citing your data, citations must be in percentage form OR word for word

quotation of what one student said. You need to cite questionnaire data three times.

____ 5. Remember to put TWO sections in your bibliography. Section one should contain THREE

search word/Google Operator combinations. Section two should contain FIVE sources

entered in APA format, double spaced.

____ 6. Remember to use the Google Operator codes to find the best sources available. Visit

the handout on sources appropriate for college research provided (especially the third

column that tells which types of sources NOT to use. You will need FIVE expert sources.

____ 7. Remember sources must be cited WITHIN the outline and in the bibliography as well.

____ 8. Remember that the body (Problem, Solution, and Visualization/benefits sections) must ONLY summarize

our research findings. It should not contain first person narration of what you plan to say--NO word for

word account of what you plan to say (manuscript). USE POINTS THAT ARE ONE SENTENCE LONG.

DO NOT USE ANY FORMAT BESIDES MONROE'S MOTIVATED SEQUENCE! DO NOT TURN IN AN

ESSAY INSTEAD OF AN OUTLINE!

____ 9. Turn in your preparation (full sentence) outline in to the instructor before your speech.

SPEECH REMINDERS:

credit. Each will be rated on a 1--5 point scale. Five points indicates that it was

very persuasive and will produce five points of extra credit. Put blank slides between visuals.

remember to cite them during your speech. You should develop these citations so they

year or last access date. Any time there is an author's name available, cite it. However, cite

the sources within the outline by following sample citations in the sample outline (NOT in

script form within your outline).

loud about 40 times from beginning to end. Do NOT read your final speech to the

audience. Your delivery of this speech should be the finest you are capable of.

key word/phrase outline. Index cards will be collected.
