Public Relations / Social Media Campaign Assignment

Due October 12, 2020 - Worth 100 points

The purpose of this assignment is to develop a public relations / social media campaign to promote an event or activity.  COVID-19 makes it difficult to plan typical events, such as Homecoming, but there are other relevant activities, such as encouraging young voters to register and vote (on election day, during early voting, or by mail where allowed).  The campus Rec Center or student organizations may be planning socially distanced events, or neighborhoods, sports teams and churches might have something to promote via publicity and social media. You may choose another activity or event that you want to promote, such as an outdoor concert.

Before you begin your assignment, read CH 16:  IMC:  Public Relations, Sponsorship and Corporate Advertising.  The deliverable includes the following:  (1) Introduction which describes the target audience and desired outcome of the campaign, expressed with an objective (2) creation of a 1 page fact sheet for the event that can be included in a Media kit (see page 402), (3) brief posting appropriate for a blog, Facebook page or organization website, and (4) Twitter campaign that includes a hashtag for the event, as well as 5 tweets:  2 before the event, 2 during the event and 1 post-event tweet providing feedback and encouraging future participation. (NOTE: You don’t have to have a Twitter account, just create a unique hashtag and list what you would tweet and when).

First you must get the details of the event or activity you are promoting. Learn everything you can about the activity, including the target market, event details, and what constitutes participation. Then set objectives for your PR/Social Media campaign. Objectives must be specific to an audience, and measurable.  Explain what you hope to achieve with this campaign.  How will you know it was successful?

Fact sheets often accompany news releases.  They contain basic information on Who is impacted, What is happening, When it’s happening, Where it’s happening and Why.  Conclude with contact information including the name of the person and either a phone number, email address or website.

In addition to the fact sheet, write two or three paragraphs for a social media posting, appropriate for a blog, Facebook or organization website.

Tweets may be up to 280 characters.  See linked article for more information.  https://techcrunch.com/2016/09/19/twitters-new-simpler-rules-for-character-counts-in-tweets-go-live/

Label your tweets as pre-event, during event and post-event.

Conclude with how you plan to measure your campaign’s impact.
