Is the Death Penalty Effective?

1.Purpose:

I would like to talk about Human Rights that one of these rights is Death Penalty. In the Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia wrote, ”Human rights are those rights that each person is entitled to simply because he or she is a human being. The concept of human rights is based on the idea that each person has worth and dignity, and so deserves certain basic.” And Martin Luther king’s program was accused to threat of violence, although he explained about his peaceful thought. Meanwhile the results show that death penalty is not effective in this society anymore. Death penalty is a sort of punishment for individuals to deter or decrease the committing the crimes. It’s exercised for a murderer convicted in some cases. The number of murders is a prove that death penalty is not a solution for our society. Besides that, this action is not moral.

2. Audience:

If it is asked the Americans to vote for death penalty for sure many of them will stand for it due to effectiveness of it. They pay tax and believe in that it’s better to spend tax in a better way rather than life imprisonment penalty. They would rather to punish the murderer by death penalty. Albeit they have a right to make decision about their money and spend it toward to better society in every perspective. The thing is that the penalty should deter or lessen the crimes in the period. On the other hand, think about the moral of this action. Life is a gift. Everyone is responsible to take care of it and no one can take this gift intentionally. However, when person committees a cruel murder it is expected the death penalty be executed to him or her

3. Background:

It is upsetting whenever we turn on TV, listen to radio or read a newspaper, we hear a story about a murder. Serial killings, shotguns, and any other way of illegally killing people is in increase. It is expected death penalty could have controlled the rate of murder crime. Unlikely, the statistics show the total number of murders in the U.S. is still high. A website released the murder victims in the USA in 2017 that “ There were a total of 17,284 reported murder and non-negligent manslaughter cases in the U.S. in 2017. Although the number of cases has declined in the past twenty years, when viewed in international comparison, the U.S. murder rate is still high”. By taking a deep look at the report, the controversial ineffectiveness of death penalty will be more tangible. If any law doesn’t work for a period, it should be substituted by more practical law. For instance, instead of death penalty, the 2 times life imprisonment plus hard work and modifying in criminals’ behavior can be a solution. Exercising the death penalty doesn’t solve the problem. It just eliminates the problem. Consider that the problem is potentially exist and unsolved.

4. Procedure:

The so-called sentence comes to mind “eye for eye”. This is what Christian Americans believe in it. By looking at bible, as Mia has mentioned: “in the book of Leviticus 24:17 and Leviticus 24:20-21. Verse 17 of Leviticus 24 says, “And he that killeth any man shall surely be put to death.” Verses 20 and 21 of Leviticus 24 say, “Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again.” “And he that killeth a beast, he shall restore it: and he that killeth a man, he shall be put to death.”  Regarding to Christians’ believes, death penalty is the suitable revenge. It is also a relief for the victims’ families. But who can throw the first stone. This is the Jesus words when the teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery and asked him to punish her based on Muses law. In John 8: 2-11 we can read that “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” Based on what bibles said the person who wants to executive the death penalty should be without the sin. It is hard to find someone who is innocent. In my opinion instead of killing the murderers, find the stems of the crime. More researches are needed to be conducted toward the solving them. There are many states that don’t execute death penalty, besides they have less murder crime and their rate is less than other cities that are executing death penalty.

5. Limitations/Qualifiers:

DPIC revealed in 2017 that For 2016, the average Murder Rate of Death Penalty states was 5.4, while the average Murder Rate of States without the Death Penalty was 3.9”. By comparison the states with death penalty to states without death penalty, we can conclude that death penalty is not effective though. To decrease the number of murders, there should be more rational ways which lawmakers should consider them as a solution for this high rate crime. If the law of gun could be changed the number of victims of shotguns, like what happened in Las Vegas, would be less than what it was. Instead of wasting money of death penalty, invest on psychological fields of crime which might bring better results on.

3.DATE:

This book is published in 2017

4.PUBLISHER:

“Bedford/St. Martin’s is as passionately committed to the English discipline as ever”

5.YOUR ATTITUDE:

Think about the moral of this action. Life is a gift. Everyone is responsible to take care of it and no one can take this gift intentionally. However, when person committees a cruel murder it is expected the death penalty be executed to him or her.

6.MAIN POINT:

King’s program was accused to threat of violence, although he explained about his peaceful thought.

7.SUPPORT:

As a human rights leader, King writes about the issues of injustice and slavery and he uses evidence in the bible.

8.SOURCES:

Because the theories are experienced and studied by him and other authors afterward, that is both documented and reliable.

9.LANGUAGE:

He mostly uses pathos in his letter where he pointed out several emotion impacts. And King ended his letter with an emotional and inspirational desire for the society.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” (255). If we allow injustice to happen to some people or in some places, we endanger everyone. We allow people to think that if it is alright to act unjustly towards some people. This attitude can spread until eventually people might act unjustly in more and more places. This comes to endanger our entire society.
