Sample Framework for a Proposal Argument

Here is a sample framework for you to use as a guide as you begin the draft for your proposal argument.

Introduction

• Presents and describes a problem that needs solving, giving it presence

• Gives background including previous attempts to solve the problem

• Argues that the problem is solvable (optional)

Presentation of the Proposed Solution

• Explains the specifics of the solution

Justification

• Persuades readers that the proposal should be implemented

• Presents and develops Reasons 1, 2, and so forth (Reasons to support the proposed solution may be arguments from principle, consequence, and precedent or analogy)

Summary and rebuttal of opposing views

Practical proposal:

• Explains why alternative solution(s) are inferior

Policy proposal (This is a very broad type of proposal that I do not advocate -- the majority of you will be writing Practical Proposals)

• Rebuts opposing view(s)

Conclusion
