The Proposal
Paper #3 Proposal
Name: Radha Dobaria
Thesis: While Art Spiegelman portrays a moment of joy in Vladek’s life after the war and the Holocaust, Vladek suffered from lingering effects such as survivor’s guilt, the loss of familial relations, and the pain of memory. By emphasizing scenes that are representative of Vladek’s hardships in life after he got married, Spiegelman elicits an empathetic response from his audience while providing variation in emotion by the juxtaposition of light and dark backgrounds in alternating panels.
