Working from Home: The Environmental Impact
Introduction
Working from home involves working from the place of residence instead of working from the office. Several reasons can make employees work from home. For instance, to save time, money, and to reduce work and life conflicts. Besides, working from home can occur to reduce stress and improve health and fitness (Bloom, 2020). Around 58% of the intelligent workers in the U.S. are working from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic (Bloom, 2020).
Hypothesis
When people work from home, there is reduced paper use, better air quality, reduced energy consumption, and lower consumption of fossil fuels. Additionally, there are reduced emissions from the greenhouse, low plastic consumption, lowered impact on infrastructure, and small towns' development.
Research Question
What is the Environmental Impact of Working from Home?
Importance in Data Science
In data science, having information regarding how working from home impacts the environment positively leads to better decision making (Hern , 2020). Usually, that data is compiled and interpreted to come up with conclusions. If the advantages of working from home are more than the disadvantages, the move is implemented. Data science analysts work closely with the government to chart the way forward. These scientists carry out the study, analyze data, and come up with conclusions and recommendations that they give to the authorities and private investors (Mustajab et al., 2020). After a discussion, the right decisions are made. In such cases, it is decided that employees will work from home since it is cheaper and saves time, among other benefits.
The Main Problem
The main problem is that employees take too much time to get to the workplace sometimes (Alipour et al., 202 0). Also, there is a traffic jam in the streets as people go to work with their cars. Besides, a lot of air and sound pollution is caused by these cars. Cars cause air and sound pollution and use a lot of fuel. Besides, a lot of money is used to buy refreshments while at work. Air pollution is the one that has contributed significantly to global warming in the world (Mustajab et al. , 2020 ) . As a result, there has been a change in climate, which directly impacts the food supply. People get to work tired due to being stuck in traffic for long.
My Tentative Solution
My tentative solution is to encourage working from home, but organizations and other employees should ensure that their workers have internet access and laptops or computers. There should also be a way of making sure that staff members are well trained to embrace technology to work (Hern , 2020). Performance should be assessed as agreed where the results of every employee are determined. Meetings should be held online using the zoom to evaluate progress and make changes where necessary (Fadinger H & Schymik , 2020).
Majority of the US employees are working from home and it is the duty of policy makers to make sure that as many employees as possible adopt this trend (Hern, 2020). Covid-19 has caused a shift towards working from home using technology (Hern, 2020). Thus, organizations have saved resources, and more time is dedicated to work. It is further explained that employees may want to work from the office even after lockdowns are lifted due to the benefits that have been identified.
I plan to use both primary and secondary data after my research is approved by the board. However, this will not be during the course’s time frame. Primary data is the one that I will collect directly from the respondents. I will use a survey method to collect the data where the tool will be an online questionnaire. Various questions will be asked where some will be open-ended, close-ended, and others will be multiple choice.
The only issues that I anticipate with the data processing tasks include coding, entry, and analysis. The processing requires a high degree of keenness to avoid errors. Therefore, I will be well prepared to face the task and get credible results.
Possible methods that I can use when allowed to proceed include survey and interview methods. However, a survey is better since it saves time and resources. Also, the analysis of data becomes easier when an online questionnaire is used.
