1. We know that using netiquette online is important, but why? What are the consequences of bad netiquette in the classroom? In your response, be sure to reflect on how it feels to be addressed with bad netiquette, and how you think others feel.
Netiquette born withe the Internet and are the rules of appropriate communication in an online discussion place or any form of communication through a network. As a common example, writing in all capitals would sound as shouting to the other end, and therefore, there are many considerations to set the appropriate tone in a message in order to be well received, since we don’t have the help of manners, gestures, and voice, as it happens in a face-to-face conversation. Bad netiquette could lead to bad feelings and hesitation in an online classroom, because it interrupts communication and proper functioning of the discussion place, where the purpose is to acquire and expand knowledge trough peer exchange. Arguing through unrespectful comments, laugh about someone’s think or the way it writes, can make the other student and the rest of the peers hesitate to continue participating in the group and consequently interrupting the act of learning.
2. How does netiquette relate to peer assessment? Why is it important to use good manners when leaving feedback?
Netiquette rules are aligned to expected behavior in an online discussion, to avoid miscommunication and hesitation, and is important in peer assessment because it maintains the health and realm of the discussion place and the cohesiveness in the community. When leaving feedback, good manners are important to avoid hurting other students’ feelings or lead to disappointment, about ourselves and about what we are capable to do, consequently, nice communication will encourage instead.
3. How do you feel about the feedback you received this week? What about the feedback you gave?
Receiving feedback is at sometimes uncomfortable, positive feedback is encouraging while negative feedback leads me to think about not being good enough, then I need to make an extra effort in perceiving it objectively and not taking it personal or as a judgement. When giving feedback is the opposite, I try to give a positive answer as well as addressing what was missed or what could have been better in a nice way, in this way it would be important to know what was the reception of that feedback, to make sure our counterparts are having a good experience instead of a negative one. It is complicated to make a balance of addressing issues and giving positive comments, most of the time, when I start writing, I try to go directly to the point and then rephrasing, but most of the time feeling not being good enough to make things nicer, it is hard to find the kind words needed, this is when I’m struggling the most because of not knowing if I would be causing anxiety or disappointment feelings.
