PSYC 1: Introduction to Psychology  UCSC Spring 2019  Final Paper Requirements and Guidelines    Rough Draft DUE Tuesday, 5/7/19  Final Paper DUE Tuesday, 6/4/19

Psychological Research’s Impact in Everyday Life

Psychology affects many areas of society. Psychological research has illuminated why and how  humans do the things we do. In this paper, you will build familiarity with peer-reviewed research,  critically analyze research to examine the replication, connect research impact to society, and work  on technical writing skills while writing about something you have interest in.    Instructions:   Identify and explain a psychology study. You can choose any topic and study that you are interested  in (see page 2 of this prompt for finding articles). Summarize the research question, methods,  results, conclusion, and significance of the study (remember to keep it concise, 1-2 sentences for  each; see below for more detailed break-down). Then, introduce and explain a new or updated  iteration/replication of your study and summarize any changes or adjustments to the replication.

1. Briefly examine a new or updated iteration/version/replication of your study and  summarize any changes or adjustments to the replication.

2. Original study needs to be a quality scholarly (peer reviewed journal article) or popular  source (e.g. reputable newspaper, magazine or media outlet). The replication needs to be a  peer-review journal article.

3. Critically engage and analyze both versions of the experiment (or study) and identify and  explain potential confounds/limitations (at least 2)

● This is a critical aspect of the paper and will be worth 30% of the grade. Conclude your paper with  the ways these studies work to inform and shape the field of psychology, as well as its influence in  mainstream applications and uses in public domain.

    General Breakdown of Paper

1. In the first paragraph(s) of your paper, you will: introduce and summarize a psychology  study (see options below for studies not covered in first unit of course; or see instructional  team to ask about those not listed).

○ A good summary will highlight the important points (who, what, when, where, and  why).

2. Locate a reiteration/replication of study: did they account for any shortcoming in the  original?

○ What was done differently than the original? How and why?   ○ New potential limitations?  ○ New discoveries, amendments, or was it disproved altogether?

3. In the second half of your paper, you will: compare and contrast the studies to critically  analyze your experiment/phenomenon of interest in light of the reading  modules/lecture-based concept, theory, or study to which you related the article and the  additional article you researched (IAs can help with any content not yet covered).   For example, you may choose to discuss some of the ideas presented below.

○ Explain how the research might illuminate a “gap” in the literature or justify the  argument that the psychological concept, extant theory, or previous research should  perhaps be revised or expanded upon to better understand this phenomenon.

○ Explain how these processes affect and influence the ways we engage and interact  with our world and the people we share it with

○ Critically Analyze the original psychology study:   i. Is it ethical by standards of it’s time? Was there an ethics board overseeing

the experiment? How would it stand up to today’s standards?  ii. How was this experiment important in the development of psychology?   iii. Practical applications. How does it inform society?  iv. Conclude with applications and links to current/modern reception of these

and how it can be used to help inform society as a whole  ○ Describe ways in the article was misleading, unclear, and how it could have been

improved upon given what you read in your reading modules and additional article.   ○ Explain how popular media misrepresents or misuses the research in light of

psychological concepts, research, and/or theory has given you new insights into this  phenomenon.

i. If you think the popular media article did a good job of reporting on this  phenomenon, explain fully why you think so and support your argument  with examples from the reading modules and additional article information.  Cite your sources!!

Finding articles:    A good way to find electronic journal articles is through an online psychology database. PsycINFO  is one of the best databases and can be found here:  https://search.proquest.com/psycinfo/advanced      This is a useful resource for using PsycINFO effectively to find the articles you may be interested in:  https://www.apa.org/science/about/psa/2013/10/using-psycinfo    To access PsychINFO you may need to use the UCSC library website and use your UCSC log-in  and gold password. Find out more here: https://guides.library.ucsc.edu/offcampusaccess Or  please check-in with your IA about finding articles.

Helpful Hints:  Start looking for an article that interests you NOW. If you are struggling to link the article to a  reading modules concept, theory, or study or if you are having difficulty finding an outside  theoretical or empirical article, bring your article or ideas to Bob’s office hours, your IA’s office  hours, or go to MSI. We are all happy to help!    Rough Draft due in lecture on Tuesday, 5/7/2019   **Be sure to attach the first page of both journal articles you read to the back of your rough draft.

Final Paper due in class on Tuesday, 6/4/2019.   **You must attach your graded rough draft and graded rough draft rubric to your final paper.                                Please see the following for specific formatting guidelines and the grading rubric that will be used.    Paper format: READ CAREFULLY OR YOU WILL LOSE POINTS!!

● Length: 3 – 3.5 pages (double-spaced) maximum. We will stop reading after 3.5 pages so be                                clear and concise!

● Font: 12-point Times New Roman font.  ● Margins: 1” margins (top, bottom, right, and left).   ● You must use proper APA format (6th edition) to cite your references in the body of your

paper.   ● You must also have reference page in APA format.

○ Instructions for basic APA format will be provided in section.  ● Please use clear language with correct syntax and spelling.  ● Be sure that you are NOT plagiarizing! Plagiarism will result in failing the paper and/or the

entire course.  ● For the rough draft, a copy of the first page of the article from the psychological journal

must be attached to the back of your paper (following the reference page).  ________________________________________________________________________

Final Paper Submission:    The final paper is due in lecture on Tuesday, June 4, 2019. Your paper will be evaluated according  to the criteria on the attached page. You will get 10 points just for turning in a complete rough draft  on time (points will be taken off for late rough drafts). Your IA will use the attached rubric to give  you feedback on your rough draft — letting you know what the point values would be IF this rough  draft were turned in as a final draft. Finally, when you turn in your final draft, your IA will assign  your grade for your final paper using the same rubric.      ** Along with your final paper, you must submit your graded rough draft and the graded rubric from  your rough draft. Your work must be STAPLED or PAPERCLIPPED in this order:   1) Final paper,   2) Graded rough draft rubric,   3) Graded rough draft.
