Writing Project 2:

Research and Analysis in Academic Writing

Assignment (5-6 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12-point font with 1 inch margins)

In our last writing project, we focused on ways to identify and analyze the conventions of any given non-academic genre. For WP2, we now turn our attention to the genre of an academic research article and the academic disciplines you will encounter in your classes at UCSB. The heart of the university is the pursuit of academic inquiry through research and publication across many different disciplines. The goal of WP2 is to help you identify, understand, and practice the various processes that guide academic inquiry. In particular, we will examine how a scholar’s disciplinary shapes his/her scholarship.

First you will choose a topic that interests you, which may include anything ranging from a current or historical social or political issue to the latest hot topic in popular culture. Next you will find two research articles on your chosen topic that written by scholars from different disciplines. The research articles must be published in scholarly journals and must be conventional research articles (in class we will talk about what constitutes a conventional research article). Then, in a 5-6 page paper, you will analyze and compare the research and writing conventions of your two sources, including but not limited to research questions, research methods, specialized vocabulary/disciplinary concepts, and use of evidence. As a non-specialist, which academic text do you think better discusses your topic and why?

· Identifying various types of evidence, and analyzing the effectiveness of that evidence

· Analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of different research and disciplinary methodologies
