CHE 432 Spring Projects

Motivations • Reinforce Core-ChemE content in a more open-ended project

• “Old” content from CHE 431 (Preliminary design) • “New” content from CHE 432 (Detailed Design)

• Hone professionalism • Teamwork • Project Management • Process simulation • Speaking • Writing

• Foster creativity and innovation

Four choices • Lignin waste stream to new products (Pick a product) • Production of Silicon Precursors for PV Manufacturing (Pick a process) • Nike Innovation Challenge

• Topical area on reprocessing wastes • Posters at Expo, May 18th

• AIChE Design Problem (3 options) • Mentored • Competing

• Per AIChE rules, no contact with others, instructors, or TAs allowed. • Team or solo division. • If competing, your project grade (60% of total) will be based solely on the final product. • 30 day limit. • Instructors reserve the right to select who will compete.

Task: Lignin as a raw material stream for a new product.

Lignin waste stream to new products (Pick a product)

Lignin waste stream to new products (Pick a product)

Black Liquor: - Liquid Biomass - Aprox half of wood ends up in

the black liquor - Heating value of ~14 MJ/kg - Is smelly (sulfur compounds)

Task: Choose Product. Preliminary Design of Process. Detailed Design of Equipment (e.g. reactor for liquid lignin biofuel)

Lignin waste stream to new products (Pick a product)

• Task: Go from MG-Si (Metallurgical grade silicon, purity ~ 99.5%) to silicon precursor (SiH4, TCS, etc.) of your choice.

Nike Circular Innovation Challenge • Sneakers!

• Huge challenge for reuse due to so many materials being used • Circular Economy: reuse materials rather than virgin feedstocks

Nike • 2 topic areas, initial designs due May 1st.

• Material Recovery • Design with Grind

• Teams can chose which topic area is most relevant, though it must be a chemical engineering-related project (e.g. process/equipment design vs. shoe designs)

• Possible topics include depolymerization of polymers to monomers for reuse.

• Todd Williams, Class of 2017!

AIChE Problem “Dimethyl Ether For Transportation” • Feedstock is specified. • Choice of process • Some economic analysis

Competing vs. non-competing

AIChE Problem For individual students or teams whose solutions may be considered for the contest: Solutions will be graded on: (a) substantial correctness of results and soundness of conclusions, (b) ingenuity and logic employed, (c) accuracy of computations, (d) form of presentation.

Project Schedule (with exception of competing proposals)

• Proposal (due Week 4) • Background/Literature Review (patents, textbooks, peer-reviewed journals, etc.) • Block Diagram • Timeline • Deliverables (Tasks and Milestones)

• Project Update (Presentation (Weeks 4-7) and Written Report (Week 8)) • Quantitative Flowsheet • Profitability Analysis

• Final Report (Presentation (Week 10) and Written Report (Finals Week, Wed. 2 pm)) • Summarize the entire project (include Update Content) • Detailed design of ONE (1) piece Major Equipment, including

• Schematic Drawing (e.g. Solidworks, Visio, or equivalent) • Pressure analysis • Material(s) of construction • P&ID • HAZOP

• Conclusions/Recommendations
