TOURISM IMPACTS
OPTION 1: Comparative Analysis of Tourism Impacts in Communities around the World
Within this option, you have the opportunity to choose one of the three following topics among tourism industry’s impact in a country (USA, Turkey, Jamaica etc.), a series of countries or places (countries in the Mediterranean region, Caribbean or South Eastern region of the USA including the SC) and write a minimum of eight (8) pages professional paper for your final term project. The idea is to draw parallels, similarities or differences of associated impacts in more than one place. Recognize that your final project will be worth 25 % of the total grade for the course! The projects are to be completed individually (no group work required in this course). Choose either one or all of the following three topics.
2. Comparative Analysis of Sociological and/or cultural impact of tourism on communities.
3. Comparative Analysis of Tourism’s economic feasibility and economic impacts on communities.
To correctly do this project, you will have to read and synthesize literature on tourism’s social, cultural or environmental impacts using established social science journals. Note: if you wish you can compare all impacts at the same time, but it is not a must. If it is easier for you to talk about only one group of impacts, do so. However, you will notice when researchers talk about impacts they tend to mix them. We expect at least 10 to 12 refereed tourism papers in your references from social science tourism journals like the Annals of Tourism Research, Tourism Management, Tourism Analysis, and Journal of Sustainable Tourism. If for some reason you cannot find tourism impact studies done/published related to your site/country, still evaluate the site you have chosen in relation to the readings you have done. For example, if you cannot find a social impact study done about Germany, you may choose to read/synthesize social impact studies done elsewhere in Austria/Switzerland but draw parallels, comparisons and conclusions regarding your choice of the country. Internet papers from mills are not accepted. All papers must come from Professional Scientific Journals listed above.
To correctly to do this project, you will have to read and synthesize literature on tourism’s impacts and make inferences toward the state you are writing about.
1) Do a literature search using library’s resources. If you are connecting from a campus location or through VPI of USC, the Google search engine will list the papers located in our USC library if and when you do google search. I usually follow this route first. The key is connection through our USC servers.
2) Our library’s site contains the top academic journals in tourism. Visit http://www.sc.edu/library/ Please go to either directly to electronic journals site that provides links to most journals in our field (e.g., Annals of Tourism Research, Journal of Travel research or Tourism Management) or use articles, data bases , Indexes to do a search using key words such as environmental impact, tourism impacts, social impacts of tourism etc. There are literally hundreds of papers in this area. Read the abstracts before reading the papers. Check the references of the first relevant paper for your topic to identify other papers. Or again, use search engines of indexes such as Hospitality and Tourism Complete to reach the papers. The bulk of your resource should be scientific papers written and published in these professional academic journals. Do not use newspapers, books or websites as your main source.
3) Read the paper and make notes/summarize the main points of the paper using your own words / your own understanding of the material. Do not cut and paste or use direct quotes without proper citation. Any attempt to use paper mills or any other source without appropriate credit will be penalized by referral to proper university authorities. I do submit the papers to university paid anti plagiarism detection sites. If you do not know how to cite a given paper, write an annotated bibliography, or paraphrase go to Purdue university’s site http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ for more information. I have referred students who otherwise were in good standing to university authorities for failure in following the USC Carolina creed. A few of them received university sanctions, a few probation of six months with a record on their transcripts. This can ruin your academic and career reputation for the rest of your life. We have a pretty good detection system plus I know what is out there regarding this topic. Always use quotation marks when in doubt, the only thing that can happen to you is earning a little lower grade because of lazy writing style as long as the content is fine. But this option is much better than being caught and referred to authorities for plagiarism. I and my TAs have zero tolerance for this.
4) Use APA citation style. American Psychological Association’s citation style. If you do not know learn it.
5) Based on my previous experience the finished document could be eight (8) pages in length, double spaced, (and 12 point font). This may not include the cover page, reference pages or any appendices like maps and photos, but keep these to only those which are necessary and directly referenced in your paper.
6) Overall, the project should have a very professional look to it. You want to impress your important client (and me too)! Color is nice (but not required), along with crisp, clean tables, photos, maps, and figures.
7) Do not wait until last minute to do the project. I am assuming about 20-25 hours might be required to finish the work.
