Introduction

Company background

Project management involves application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. The requirements must be in line with the project’s objective for the project to be a success. The company Steel and Wire Products specializes in production of steel and wire products. The company was founded in 1929 and is family owned. The company is located in 6901 Quad Ave, Baltimore. The company deals with production and sale of collated and pneumatic nails, staples and brads, screws, fasten master, stainless steel, Simpson strong ties, concrete products and bales ties. The company has full time employees who ensure quality products are produced.

Current process

The company ensures first come first serve to ensure fairness in service delivery. It also works by ensuring having a large inventory on hand to ensure quick delivery on demand. The products are continuously inspected quality wise during production to ensure the right standards are produced together with a follow up done by sales personnel to access customer satisfaction. This is important for the company in maintaining its customers and also ensuring quality products and customer satisfaction. The company has the distribution department which deals with product distribution to customer especially hardware stores who are the major customers and contractor companies. Increased demand for the company product has prompted need for increased production and inventory. This calls for more storage space for the increased products as well as ensuring security is observed for the products.

Project overview

The company wish to solve the challenge of increased stock storage by remodeling the existing store to accommodate more products. This will be achieved by building shelves and subsections for the products. The dimension of the store will be obtained and a detailed drawing of the store with the subdivision made. This will guide the activities to be done, the resources required for subdivision, labor and time utilization. Different drawing will be made from where the most suitable design will be used for the store layout. The design must ensure accessibility of all the products during storing and removing. It must ensure that first in will be the first out. All products must be accessible with the forklift which is used in carrying goods around the company. The drawing chosen was the one accommodating the number of goods.

Objective

· To design most spacious store layout design development

· To plan for the designed layout remodeling

· To partition the store as per the new layout.

Project General Approach

The project will be conducted under a project management team that will oversee all the activities performance. The team will be responsible for project planning which include activities, budget and activities schedule development. Each of the project management team member will have a team to work with depending on the job allocated. This will ensure activities not related can be conducted at the same time.

The project is a construction project which will involve a lot of technical work from layout design development, activities identification, activities requirement identification and project budgeting.

Project Constraint

The likely project constraints are in activity duration determining. The duration determined may be affected by ongoing activities in the company.

The store remodeling project starts with developing store layout. This involved developing several layouts and choosing one which provide the best space utilization and low cost. This activity is estimated to take an average of 2 days done by a draft engineer with the company management discussion. The managers will also be responsible for selecting the most suitable from 4 layouts developed. The layout will guide on the activities to be required for the project. The next part will be activities sequencing. This is done by determining the activities relationship. The activities with their relationship determined can be arranged depending on which activity starts and the one that follows it. Activity dependency includes technical dependency where one activity forms the foundation for the other activity. The dependency relationship helps to see which activities are either finish to start where one activity has to be finished for the other activity to start, start to start activities two activities start together as they may be having to be done simultaneously and the start to finish activities as stated by Morell, J. A. (2019) in determining task links.

Project resources

The resources for each activity will be obtained by analysis of previous similar projects and the project understanding. Each of the activity was matched with the required material resource and labour force. The material selection for partitioning included steel tubes of 60mm by 60mm by 3mm as post and tubes 40mm by 40mm by 3mm as cross bars the other material that will be used is the weld mesh. The weld mesh to be used is 50mm by 50mm box with wire thickness of 4mm.

Project Risk Assessment

The project risk management include risks identifying and controlling the areas where risks are likely to occur in the process of the project as stated by Del Cano, & de la Cruz, (2002). The risks management strategy to be adopted will be placing the risks among the requirements and using the database-centric approach. In the database all the project requirements will be placed. The links between the requirements and the activities can easily be made. The risk management starts with risk identification and considering our case the following risk are likely to occur:

· Injuries during demolition

· Poor study of the floor layout leading to marking the wrong dimensions

· Wrong material estimation

· Wrong size of material cut during preparations

· Injuries during partition construction either from welding or grinder use

After the risks have been identified, the risks are analyzed and planned. Analysis involves determining the likelihood of the risk occurring, when, and the kind of damage that is likely to be experienced.

Project schedule

The project requires an effective project schedule management to ensure timely project completion. This includes developing a project schedule. Using the tasks in the work Breakdown structure project schedule can be made. The working days are from Monday to Friday each day starting at 8:00 am and closing at 5:00pm. The task duration will be estimated depending on the work required for each task and then comparing it with time taken to complete similar task in other projects. This will increase the accuracy of the estimated time. The duration estimation will be done by the project engineer. The prepared schedule will be presented to the company management for verification from when it will be published and distributed to the various workers involved in the project.

The project resources are the material prepared for partitioning and the labour. The material will be utilized as per the bill of material prepared. The bill of material shows all the materials that will be used and the quantity required.

Cost Estimates and Budget

Cost management covers the full life cycle of the project from planning to project completion putting into account the up to cost control measures as explained by Kerzner, (2017). After resource planning cost estimation of the resources can be done. Engineering cost estimation involves doing individual tasks cost and then summation of all the tasks cost to get the overall cost as explained by Garcia-Fornieles, Fan, Perez, Wainwright & Sehdev, (2003). The material cost and outside contractor cost was obtained by getting individual material cost quotes and using the quote form distributor selected. The labor cost adopted was the accepted industrial wide standards. Cost for quality control and other overhead costs were factored in the material cost and labor cost. This cost estimation method is effective for technical projects as it considers all the tasks of the project. The cost estimation method gives the maximum possible project cost and the lowest case. Therefore, enable planning for the worst-case scenario.

Conclusion

Store remodeling project is a technical project with more of construction work activities. The project started by determining the project’s requirements. This requirement goes hand in hand with the objectives of the project which were to remodel the company store top accommodate more goods and make all the goods easily accessible. The store layout is also to ensure the order of goods that is first in is the first out order. Once the objectives were set the project overview was developed. This gave a rough guide of the project structure. The project covers demolishing the existing store partitions and designing another partition that will accommodate more products and that will ensure goods are easily accessible. With this the work Breakdown structure was developed covering all the tasks for each activity. The activities were determined together with all the resources each activity require and labor. The project risk management which involved identifying likely risks, rating the risks and developing contingency plan to avert the risks was done. The activity duration was determined and their interdependency which guided in development of project schedule. The duration determination was a challenge since various factors will affect the flow of work. This include the fact that there will be other activities going on in the store and around the store. Project resources were determined using the work breakdown structure which showed all the project tasks and their requirements that include labor and material. The total cost of all the tasks enabled in project budget development as well as the control baseline.
