Project Management

Introduction

The development of collaborative software and the rise of the internet has created a new dimension into project management. Virtual teams and virtual project management determine the extent of how new technologies affect projects. In essence, these new channels of communication offer opportunities for individual participation (Larson, & Gray, 2013). Therefore, the new communication technologies are a necessity because the modern era office is characterized by high levels of mobility which is a primary element of project management.

Advantages and Limitations of Virtual Teams

First, organizations with virtual teams enjoy savings on their costs. In simple terms, they can do away with huge expenses on utility bills, executive travel, and real estate and office spaces (Snyder, 2014). Second, the success of any virtual working team is pegged on the use of multiple communication technologies which makes office work more manageable. Some of the communication technologies include video conferencing, messaging and emails.

One of the limitations of virtual teams is the lack of physical interactions that affect members of the virtual groups (Larson, & Gray, 2013). In essence, this is considered to be a severe problem that may contribute to the disruption of corporate culture and loss of employee loyalty. Another disadvantage is in the form of Poor leadership (Snyder, 2014). In other words, poor management skills on the part of the leader may derail the progress of the team.

Factors to Consider in Project Management

The project delivery system entails the general sequence of activities, roles, and the relationship of parties and the structure of relationships required in the delivery of a project. Whereas project management skills are essential, the resources such as money, place, people or any other element necessary to ensure the planned activities are successful need to be taken into consideration. In this case, before allocating resources, their availability needs to be understood (Larson, & Gray, 2013). Moreover, estimation of the resources is also essential so that an individual may comprehend the amount of resources that can be assigned to each activity (Snyder, 2014).

Management of Resource Performance for Virtual Teams vs. In-Person Teams

In case of in-person teams, team members are classified based on their functional skills whereas it can be argued that performing in virtual teams can be somehow challenging for some individuals. In this case, isolation and lack of face to face interaction might be somehow challenging for everyone (Larson, & Gray, 2013). Relative to the in-person teams, virtual teams can perform effectively in a flat organization structure that possesses dim lines of hierarchies and authorities. Therefore, it is essential to take into consideration selection of team members and organization structure when it comes to choosing of members of the two teams.

Conclusion

The new communication technologies are a necessity because the modern era office is characterized by high levels of mobility which is a primary element of project management. Taking into account the limitations caused by virtual teams, it is important to be keen on the collaboration, communication, and cultural issues. In this case, organizations should be able to follow a unique management approach. An ideal management approach should concentrate on cohesion and building trust among individuals working in virtual teams in an effort meant to harness the merits of a successful virtual team.
