Term-Project – Family Business Course

Objective: Investigation to better understand family business goals

General Research question: Generational gap, gender, and family business goals

Reading material: Articles and additional information about goals and generational gap in family business – There is a folder in iLearn with material. Students have to collect additional information based on their own interest – book, magazines, newspapers, etc- to complement the analyses and explain results.

Final project: The aim is to produce a practical report – Style and report presentation should be defined by students – maximum 12 pages.

Group: maximum of 3 students per group

Data collection: The data collection is individual – we are going to use a questionnaire to interview family business members

Data analysis: The main analyses –descriptive statistics - are produced by the instructor. The students can ask for further analyses to complement their report.

Report structure: The students are free to innovate and define the structure of their report. The suggested structure is as follows:

· Introduction (1 page – a summary of the report)

· Topic of the report (2-3 pages – explain the topic to be discussed in the report. Give to the potential readers a brief understanding about the topic such as goals and generational gap, explain why it is important, define the main concepts, and explain the model to be used to describe the main results).

· Research question (1 page - the main question that the students would like to answer with this report)

· Method (1/2 page - explain the method used to collect data)

· Results (6 pages - analysis and explanation of the main results. This is the most important part of the project since the students are interpreting results, analyzing the main data, answering the research question, and introducing their own critical thinking)

· Recommendations (1-2 pages. Explain what we have learnt with this report – why this report is useful – what kind of recommendation you can provide to family business)
