Week 16 - December 11: Final Exam Week

- Last Day of class

Explanation of Sources

I wanted to create a theories of cultural diversity course that incorporated international

relations and international education. I wanted to start by explaining what cultural diversity is,

so the students have a clear understanding. I wanted to tie in articles about understanding

cultural competence and the different cultural patterns from around the world; as well as

intercultural communication and how language and culture intertwine. In order to efficiently

learn a language, one must also study the culture and people of that language. I wanted to

cover articles that deal with the barriers to diversity, especially in the education field and in the

classroom. Today, most companies and businesses are a global enterprise with people working

for the same company from different countries and cultures. I wanted to enhance the

importance and challenges many companies and organizations face when managing a very

diverse group of people. I also wanted to touch on the importance of being aware and sensitive

to cultures and when interacting with other peoples and about their values. Managing cultural

diversity is not just important in the workplace but also in education. The world is becoming a

very diverse place. Countries no longer just serve their own people but also people from very

different places, who are now active participants in that country’s economy and education

7

system. The last week I wanted to tie everything together by talking about culture diversity in a

contemporary world. The world we live in today. I hope that this course will be helpful to

students who are interested areas such as advocacy and outreach, multicultural community

and organizations, refugee and immigrant services, and international student exchange and

study abroad for their future careers.
