Foundation Design based on soil test reports and column loads
As a geotechnical engineer you have been approached by a structural engineer with a floor plane of multistory building showing the distribution and the loadings of each column in the building. The soil was tested by three bore holes and their locations are as shown on the plan.
Your task is to find the appropriate foundations depth and dimensions such that the foundation is safe. The settlement should not exceed 25 mm and the maximum differential settlement should not exceed (1/400).
Submittals
A report which must include
1) Introduction of the project
2) Description of the available data
3) Estimated soil profile and the details of the methodology used
4) Estimated soil parameters that will be used in the design process in table form and the details of the methodology and references used.
5) Tabulated foundation sizes and depth to include allowable load, expected average ultimate bearing capacity as calculated by Das-book and Meyerhof methods, and average expected settlement as calculated by Meyerhof/Bowles method and Berardi and Lancellotta method.
6) Description of the methods used and calculations to be included in an appendix
7) Proposed foundation plan drawn to scale by AutoCAD or any other drawing software on A3 paper.
8) Final discussion and recommendations
