Here is a description of the project assignment for which you must address all of the following criteria as that is the rubric basis for grading.

Objective: This is the first part of a three-part assignment: an individual assignment to research existing or emerging IT related technology and its ethical impact.

Note: You must produce this project report in your original expression. Also, do not quote any source text and do not include any graphics of any kind in your project papers. Only use text and original expression - only that will be counted in addressing the minimum word count and addressing the topic criteria.

Important Note: After submission of your C1 report, your subsequent grading will include comments concerning your choice of topic and its possible refinement if/as needed for your subsequent C2 report in which you represent the result of your research on this chosen topic. Please check and follow any suggestions provided in the comments. If no comments suggest topic refinements, you can proceed with your topic as planned.

Submission Requirements: Submit the assignment response for grading in your corresponding project Assignments Folder as a single attached Microsoft Word file (as an .rtf or .doc format file).

Information Technology – Ethical Issues that Arise Because of the Technology (choose topic from this list):

The Internet: search engines, filtering, pornography, access, etc.

Databases: data mining, privacy, security, etc.

Communication: e-mail, social networking, monitoring, etc.

Gaming: regulation, violence, addiction, gender stereotyping, educational games, etc.

The IT Industry: intellectual property, e-waste, software piracy, etc.

Research Questions:

Under each of the following headings, state one of three critically important questions that you would like to address regarding your topic when you complete your research (in the subsequent C2 Project report).

Include a written description (at least 1 or 2 sentences as a brief paragraph) for each question that describes and justifies why that question is critically important in addressing the chosen ethical issue. These questions will form the thesis and starting point for writing the report in your next project.

Reminder: The emphasis on this paper is on digital information technology and the ethical issue(s) with its use!

Note: The objective in developing and posing these questions is to stage your research and writing for the C2 Project Issues report so that one or more ethical principles are applied and explained as a result of your research. This process helps you establish a thesis for your research.

Provide at least three proposed reference sources (in APA reference format), at least two sources of which must be found using the UMUC library online database.

Reminder: Include a cover page and follow all APA formatting requirements.

 

Two other criteria are the basis of grading:

APA Compliance: All reference sources and in-text citations must be used in accord with APA style requirements. For the chosen article, you mustprovide both a citation with the body of your text where it is first being referenced AND a corresponding reference after the end of your report. The reference to your online article must include the Web address (URL) that when clicked by a mouse will open a browser to the corresponding Web site (i.e., one that anyone can click on to re-access the original article). Both citation and reference must be in compliance with the American Psychological Association (APA) formatting rules. Note: The URL should be cited in the APA reference for an online article. Here is a link to descriptions and examples of APA references by category of online article publication:
