When I began this class, I took the Skills GAP Assessment as required to all students. There were obviously numbers of challenges that I faced upon matriculating into this course. Challenges included: communication, critical thinking and analysis, and strategic decision making.
On Critical thinking and analysis aspect, I worked tirelessly to be able to locate, research, and access sufficient information so as to investigate the issue in applying logical and clear processes based upon facts and ethical considerations.
Finally, the strategic decision making goal was to grasp skills that will help acquire, retain talents, and how to manage the organization’s finance in the multi global operations and become legal acumen in business global settings.
To achieve my short term and aggressive goals in ironing out my challenges at the end of the semester, I had to regularly check my progress through completion of class assignments including: personal and group projects, reading of class materials, interaction with professor-kind feedback, and class discussions.
Each given assignments, was an opportunity for me to learn new skills and or enhance what I already know. I have learned how to effectively use the school library and other database to access, investigate, and research information needed to address issues. Moreover, I enhanced my writing skill through memos and projects writing assignments, class discussions, and professor feedback. I can see tremendous progress made from when I began the Masters program. Needless to say that I have acquired and enhanced as well business concepts and legal acumen in US civil and criminal laws, US and International legal contracts, legal form of business, tort damages, employment at-will, resume fraud, domestic and international dispute resolution, and so forth. In addition, I also enhanced my cultural understanding and risks in operating in a business multi-global environment. Project 3 was very helpful in that aspect.
When I revisited and re-evaluated myself against the strategic decision making skill. I noticed that I had gained lot of knowledge with regard to analyzing and applying ethical decision making approaches, analyzing the political, legal, economic, and cultural forces that impact the multinational businesses aspect. At the same token, I was excited as well to expand my knowledge in analyzing the impact of foreign and domestic laws, Foreign Corruption Practice Act (FCPA) and of the cultural background in order to evaluate business opportunities and risks when operating in the global market.
As a future leader, I also learned how to handle workplace conflicts and or dilemmas using the best approach of Joseph Badaracco: “right versus right” framework. It is comprised of four questions and three tests.
The use of Virtual Meeting room resources was another beneficial skill that I experienced for the first time. It is a very tool to know how to manage notably when you have workforce scattered all over the world. But in terms of a team organization, the last Project 5 helped me to understand how difficult it is to accomplish anything when there is lack of communication, understanding, and sympathy. The issue I experienced with the group breakdown in communication. I couldn’t interact effectively with other members of the group. I think that it was due to system conversion form Google to outlook issue.
When revising and re-evaluating myself against the new Global Attitude Protocol (GAP) survey that I took, it showed a 6 digit jump from the one I took initially when I began this class. This is encouraging sign as far determining my personal mindset of the global world.
This class has helped me achieve my goals and understand how to nurture not only personal relationships but principal-agent enduring links as well. There were things that I taking for granted prior to taking this course. At end of this class I feel well informed and emboldened to see and tackle situations that may arise at workplace with different view and dexterity.
The achievement of these goals were only possible through rigorous screening in personal life, personal daily sacrifices, relevant class materials, professor’s kind feedback and encouragement, personal and group projects and class discussions participations. After class I am a different being. “Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the promise of progress in way society, in every family” says Koffi Annan.
