Action Foundation. It grants $1,500 for student-led projects that involve ECU students in

meeting community needs. Project Mental Education provides access to mental health classes

that are open to the public and free of charge. Project Mental provides classes utilized at

volunteer locations, to provide mental health awareness to the community.

Outlined in this document you will find the proposal for Project Mental Education

which will benefit the community of Ada and everyone who attends the free classes. Giving

everyone the knowledge and information they need to assist fellow community members and

better inform themselves with mental health problems in the community and the United States.

Providing these educational classes to the community will provide the knowledge they

don’t currently have and can provide additional support to mental health patients. Providing

informational packets, specific classes, support groups, health facility specific classes, along with

additional classes to the community. Our goal with Project Mental Education is to ensure that the

community understands mental illness in a way they haven’t before.

With the assistance of local facilities, along with local community members we can better

educate the community in a way that can change the mental illness stigma.

Introduction

Community is almost as valuable as your home. It can bring you a sense of belonging and

peace, it makes you feel wanted and needed. Project Mental Education provides educational

classes to members of the community about mental illness. Project Mental Education will speak

with local health faculties in the community to gain volunteers in providing education classes

regarding anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and how to handle stressful

situations which one might find themselves struggling with.

Utilizing the Community Outreach Grant, we can purchase pamphlets and information

that can be handed out during the educational classes as its important people are provided

information. “In the United States, almost half of adults (46.4% percent) will face a mental

illness during their lifetime” (Kapil R). These numbers can be scary if you really thing about it,

“14% of Americans have at least one disorder” (Kapil R). It’s important we talk about these

problems as individuals for those won’t understand them or know how to deal with them. This

helps to remove negative stigmas.

Utilizing local facilities such as Urgent Care, Mercy Medical System, Chickasaws, with

other local facilities we can provide classes which offer information along with certification

classes to the community. We can offer certification classes such as CPR for individuals who

want it. Along with diabetic care for all adults. “Michigan State University released a study

which surveyed 4,600 people in that study 32% percent of the people couldn’t identify the signs

of prescription drug abuse, 80% percent didn’t think that it was a treatable issue” (JR Thorpe).

Project Plan

Project Mental Education will provide easy and free access at volunteered locations

within the community, which will provide educational classes giving information, tips, and

knowledge the community needs regarding mental illness. Working to provide awareness the

community needs to assist others and themselves regarding mental health awareness in the

community of Ada is the goal.

We can do this by ensuring the volunteer buildings are being utilized, volunteer class

teachers are reaching out to provide educational classes and along with overall community

attendance. We know this is attainable as we can work with the Irving Center to provide classes

to the elder community, and work with the local high school’s to provide points, or achievements

for attending the classes. Utilizing the class to gain volunteer hours for graduation and providing

educational information which can be utilized in life will be going the extra mile.

Project Mental Education expects to spend six (6) months organizing class teachers and

locations for one (1) year in advance. Working with local health facilities, we can provide

educational information relevant for problems consisting in the community’s health

organizations. We will spend that six (6) months encouraging community members to attend.

Placing flyers on health facilities and department stores will reach the community audience.

Once the program as been implemented for one year, we will review classroom

attendance to track the most beneficial day for the classes to be held. We will look at the best

geographic location for them to be held along with the most popular type of classes. Graphing

this information out will be prudent in understanding the community needs. This will ensure we

are teaching classes the community members need/want.

organizational skills. Assisting in events at work has helped prepare me for event schedules such

as this, which will help with the strict time management the project will be under. Working

management level careers have provided me with additional assistance in running teams and

Conclusion

Project Mental Education can provide additional benefits for community members that

are not as mentally aware. Mental Education is important for adolescence to learn about as the

suicide rate can only go up. In studies it shows men are more likely to commit suicide than

females. “In 2017, young men

between 15 and 19 killed themselves

at a rate of 17.9 per 100,000” (Healy

M). These rates can be changed with

mental health awareness. The stigma

that comes with mental health needs

to be broken. Many individuals

consider themselves slightly informed

about mental illness according to the

survey of American Addiction

Center’s” (The Stigma of Mental

Illness). Ada needs public access to community provided mental health education classes.

Utilizing local community health facilities, we can better educate the community to provide

better information to the public regarding mental illness. Utilizing the grant provided we can

start Project Mental Education which will better the community of Ada and will ensure everyone

is mentally aware. With “80 percent of top university executives saying that mental health is

more of a priority on campus” (Bauer-Wolf J). Its important that we understand how to deal with

it. Project Metal Education is a step in the right direction for the entire community of Ada.
