Racism and Stereotypes

Racism makes our society cruel. The color of the skin does not represent a person’s personality. There is a lot of racist people, but mostly, they include white Americans. Ben Carson in his essay “Gray Matter, the Stuff That Really Matters” states that without different kinds of races our world would be boring. However, Hailey Yook in her essay “Positive Stereotypes Are Hurtful, Too” states that stereotypes of Asians are offensive, even when people call them smart. Furthermore, race and outward appearance are valued as opposed to the value of what’s inside like integrity. American race issues are on darkness of skin color gives more weight to minority groups. However, Americans try to solve the racial discrimination towards people with dark skin, but other racial discriminations are often ignored.

Even when people are against racism, some immigrants suffer from racial discrimination. Asians suffer from racism in America, but it is less than African Americans do. Some people do not value Asians as diligent students. People have the stereotype that all Asians are smart, so there is nothing special if Asians study in good universities like Harvard and Yale. Hailey Yook studies at the University of California-Berkeley. She worked hard for this university: “Therefore, no matter how much effort, studying or practice an Asian person puts in, when he or she achieves academic excellence, it is likely that the common reaction will be along the lines of “Asians are so smart” or, you guessed it, “You’re so Asian’ (Yook 127). Yook does not understand why Americans think like this, and why they do not understand that the stereotypes can hurt people. In today’s world, there is a lot of different stereotypes about different races. For example, people say that all Kazakhs are lazy, or all Arabs are terrorists. The stereotypes about people are not always true. However, people do not understand it and that is why immigrants in the United States of America face these problems very often.

African-Americans have been fighting for their rights all the time while other races did not do anything. According to Britannica.com, “Through nonviolent protest, the civil rights movement of the 1950s and ’60s broke the pattern of public facilities’ being segregated by “race” in the South and achieved the most important breakthrough in equal-rights legislation for African Americans since the Reconstruction period (1865–77).” It was a very hard time for black people, but they went through it, and nowadays, they have their legal rights. Ben Carson, a black neurosurgeon and current United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, under the Trump Administration, claims, “A great deal of the racism in the past was based on total ignorance, which bred fear and hatred” (Carson 158). Carson is an African-American himself, and he has experienced discriminations due to his dark skin. African-Americans always fight for their rights instead of just complaining, while now Asian-Americans start to complain about racism towards them. Complaining will not help other races to gain the respect if they do not fight for their rights. People need to do something if they want to achieve goals. People did not fight for their rights while they did not have to.

People create stereotypes about people and their races, but they do not think about people’s personalities. People are different, everyone has their own characteristics and thoughts. There is no person who is similar to someone in everything. People do not choose their nationality, but they can choose their personality. Carson claims, “We have a choice of concentrating on superficial characteristics, which mean little or nothing, or concentrating on the source of our humanity, our intellect, our personality, and the content of our character” (158). The person can be different. For example, a woman can be beautiful outside, but ugly inside. She can look nice and pretty, but she also can be rude and angry at the same time.

People have stereotypes that make them not to pay attention to person’s character. In brief, people ignore the personality of the person because of the stereotypes. Just imagine our world without different races, all people would be same. There would not be any racist people, however, it would be boring world. Anyway, people would try to stand out from the crowd because people want to be unique. Nobody wants to look totally same as someone else: “Who would want to get up in the morning if everybody looked exactly like them?” (Carson 159). For some people, it is important to show their individuality. That’s why people will find different ways to look different. For example, some people can dye their hair, or make a tattoo or piercing, or wear weird clothes. By these ways, they think that they will express themselves. If people look weird and wear strange clothes, many Americans would not value those differences. They would be known as weird people, and others would judge them and try to avoid. Our society ignore the fact that even without different color of skin people would want to be different.

Our world is not just black and white it is also colorful. The past made us all different. Marriage between different races created new colors. Latino Americans, and Asians, and African Americans they all have their own colors of skin. However, some people have stereotypes that people imagine some unreal characters just with white color of skin. And that makes other races feel bad: “She indicated that in American culture they are usually portrayed as Caucasian” (Carson 158). For example, Santa Claus is always white in children’s cartoons. Nobody thinks that Santa Claus can be African American or Asian American. If we imagine him differently, it is not bad, moreover, he can be more interesting and more mysterious. It is very interesting how racial diversity can change the human external appearance. People try to ignore discriminations towards the stereotypes about fictional characters.

Some Americans have such strong stereotypes about races that judge people’s future. Some people consider that black people are criminals and they will not achieve any goals in the future. African Americans are often offended that people say that they are alcoholic or drug addicted. Society puts a lot of pressure on them by saying that they are losers because of their race. Opposite thing happens with Asians. People consider that they are smart and nerds, that is why in the future they can work with technologies in a good company. Asians have to be hard-workers, and they have to have good grades at school. That makes a lot of stress for them: “I’ve witnessed during all of my years in the public school system how parents, classmates and even teachers expect the Asian student to excel and even unknowingly guide them in math and science without considering the individual student’s interests and abilities” (Yook 127). Race cannot tell who the person is, and who he is going to be in the future. If there are a lot of poor black people or a lot of Asians scientists, it does not mean that all of them are same. People ignore the fact that stereotypes limit people’s opportunities.

Ignorance should not be valued. People consider racism as discriminations about African-Americans because they were the only ones who fought for their rights. Other races suffer too, but they do not fight for their rights. They consider people’s insults as stereotypes that they can ignore. It is wrong to ignore such important stuff that can offend people. If American ignore insults in their direction, it can become worse than now. People should always fight for their rights. It is bad to let people humiliate other races. The problems are ignored until it becomes too late to do something about it.
