Essay engagement management
PROJECT 3
CROSS-CULTURAL/RHETORICAL LITERACIES
CROSS-CULTURAL/RHETORICAL LITERACIES Purpose: The purpose of this project is to demonstrate how students from different cultural backgrounds use different rhetorical (writing) strategies to describe and analyze their cultural artifacts (see project 2 project guidelines) In this paper, you will: ● write a cross-cultural/rhetorical analysis paper ● read your peers’ papers (there will be 4-5 students in a group); your peers’
papers will be your sources. You can also use additional sources to support your argument
● summarize, paraphrase, and quote your peers’ essays ● compare, contrast, and also critically analyze the essays ● demonstrate how everyone uses different rhetorical strategies to describe
cultural artifacts ● state what is old knowledge (you already knew) and new knowledge ● avoid plagiarism (and also help your peers avoid plagiarism)
WORKING ON THE PROJECT: WRITING PROCESSES ● Write 7-10 inquiry questions on Google Drive and share them with your
colleagues (and share with your peers for peer review--make it commentable).
● Arrange your inquiry questions and create outline on Google Drive (and share with your peers for peer review--make it commentable).
● Begin to develop your project based on the outline and inquiry questions (if you change some, let me know).
● Post your draft -1 in Eli and do peer review (group peer review) based on the rubrics (I will assign groups after you post your drafts); peer review guidelines will be posted in Eli.
● Revise your project based on your peers’ feedback and comments and post Draft -2 on Google Drive (or Eli--I will let you know) for peer review
● Revise your project based on the comments and feedback. ● Final project--post on the project 3 web page (like project 1 and 2)
THINKING WHILE WRITING ● What is the main thesis/focus? Does it have a central idea? Is it clearly
established and maintained throughout (the paper)? ● Does it develop the purpose of your paper? ● Does it provide important evidences to support your claim? ● Does it address (global) audience well? You have audience from all around
the world. ● Does it raise question that you are trying to explore? ● How is the main idea supported by evidences (or supported by other
sub-titles)? ● What evidences, examples, sources, images, and videos do you have to
support your ideas? ● Does the writer/you quote/cite and analyze the sources well? ● Is the “Works Cited” page for MLA) or “References” page for APA created
(in a separate page)? ● Are the use of syntax, grammar, and mechanics accurate?
AUDIENCE/PURPOSE-DRIVEN ESSAY ● Your last name/page number, your/professor’s name, course information,
project, and due date ● Title/subtitles ● Main idea is explained well that is followed by illustrations, evidences,
examples, and images/tables etc. ● You can use figures, tables, and graphics (use captions-see model
essays); if you are using them, they should communicate what you intend them to do; they should not result in unnecessary clutter
● Sources: Summarize, paraphrase, and quote them properly (be aware of plagiarism)
● Revise your essay several times and also ask your peers to read it for you; revise where your readers do not understand, or wherever they tend to get lost
● Edit, polish, and proofread ● Final Paper!
