SUBJECT: Approval of measures to reduce racial and cultural discord in MSU

This proposal introduces, explains, and provides solutions to racial tension that has been increasing among the students population in Midwestern State University. The institution accommodates students from across the world with different entities and racial background. Thus, there is need to create a culture of acceptance among the majority students body with different minority student groups. As a student of the university, I am writing this memo to request your approval to put forward recommendations intended to obtain understanding and harmony among different student bodies as they interact in various education endeavors.

The Problems

Midwestern State University is home to about 6,000 undergraduate students, this population includes students coming from various countries. Thus, the institution have students with different cultural understanding, behavior, way of life, and racial concept. Therefore, bringing the students to accept one another and appreciate the difference has been a problem. This has resulted to racial tension, rejection and cultural conflicts from within the students’ body. The lack of programs to ensure harmony among students has been a major contributor to the present racial tension and cultural war in the institution. It can be observed that different students groups operate within their individuals groups because of the fear of rejection and inferiority. For instance, African students only associate with fellow African. The interracial and cultural association among the students have gone down since different students groups consider others as strangers. One of the main aims of education is to eliminate cultural and racial barriers. However, this may not be achieved in Midwestern State University if students are not made to accept and understand the differences that exists among them.

Nonetheless, Students leadership have not been adequately empowered to assist in bringing the students together to enable the institution to achieve its social education objectives. The need to ensure harmony is made difficult with the increasing cultural and racial discord in the institution. The university regulations on racial and cultural disparity is not enforced properly. Besides, this will only work when the students have been made aware of the importance of racial difference and the need to accept and appreciate people from different races, ethnicities and cultures. Lack of adequate mechanisms to bring students together thwarts every effort to ensure unity in the students’ body.

Solutions

I have a strong believe that the racial and cultural discord at Midwestern State University can be addressed through several mechanisms. For instance, the institution should make it possible for anti-racism officers to visits different student groups to talk about racisms and break beliefs that most students carry with them to the university. This should be done in a formal basis, not only when there is a racial conflict of allegations but as a regular mechanisms to enhance students’ unity, racial and cultural understanding. Nonetheless, they will provide information on the anti-racism policy and the best ways to adhere differences that exists among individuals. The grievance procedures provided by these officers ensures that students receive sympathetic and confidential hearing. The grievance procedure includes telling people concerning their racial behavior and letting them know that you don’t like it. It also include discussing the situations with experts on the same issues, speaking with your supervisor and making a formal complaint. Nonetheless, students who experience racial behaviors will be advised to keep confidential records for the same such as name place and the behavior.

The administration should establish organizations in campus that constantly hold public discussions on the need to work together as students pursuing the same objectives rather that advance rejection based on race and cultural difference. The organizations should include students from different ethnic groups and races. The open discussions should address the implicit bias and remediate racial and cultural illiteracy. The student’s leadership programs should be structured to allow minority groups to get leadership positions, this will send a strong message of unity and inclusion across the student body. Besides, the institution should make and elaborate structure that addresses the racial and cultural tension when they exists. This includes effective enforcing the racial regulation established by the institutions. Students’ groupings must be made to include all races and ethnicities to encourage bonding and make students realize and appreciate their cultural differences.

Qualifications

I am qualified to conduct this research since I am a student of the university, and I get aggrieved every time I learn of racial and cultural tension in the institution. I understand the importance of togetherness and how it positively impacts on education outcome. I will use my knowledge of the problem and firsthand experience as a guide while conducting the research.

Research Plan

Prior to the actual research, I will speak with different students group to get their experience with racial and cultural discord in the student’s body. Besides, I will ask the students’ to name ways in which they have experienced the problem and how they felt about it. To continue, I would ensure from the students the action they deem fit to prevent the problem from happening. The next step will be to address the administration of the Midwestern State University concerning the data I have collected and how I wish to proceed with the research and bring the necessary changes.

Conclusions

I believe that the recommendations will help in making the institution a better place for all students irrespective of race and ethnicity.
